I thought it would be an interesting idea to have a thread to aggregate a list of off menu items (not listed on the restaurant’s menu) bought at restaurants you visit.

For me, when I go to China Chef in Morton Grove about 1x/month I ask for large container of chili oil. You have to specifically ask for it or they will give you a small solo cup container for about 50 cents. There homemade chili oil is sold for $4 for a small glass jar (maybe 7-8 ounces) and not listed on the menu. China Chef's version of chili oil is my favorite of any Chinese restaurant.

The weekend mutton biryani at Khan BBQ is excellent. I don't think it's on the menu, at least. On reflection, it might only be served on Saturday.

I can confirm that it is on the menu because we ordered it last night.

I don’t understand what the sandwiches have to do with off menu items.

Definitely has to be the Will Special at J.P. Graziano Grocery Co. Top sandwich in the city!

Simple - he/she is saying that places that have a Reuben sandwich and a turkey sandwich on the menu, can make a turkey Reuben sandwich that is not on the menu.

But maybe at some places it is on menu or they have bad turkey and it wouldn't be a favorite. It seems to me an "off menu item" should be in reference to a specific restaurant.

Graziano's does a fine tribute to the Will Special (named after, and created by, the late LTHer YourPalWill), but the original can be had at Riviera, also as an off menu item. Both establishments are GNRs and worthy of a visit.

Yes....but why in the name of all that is good and decent in this world would anyone prefer such a concoction?

I believe it is an indication of just how bad poor quality corned beef can be rather than any relative goodness of turkey.

Sun Wah sells their chili oil. I tend to make my own but Sun Wah's is one of the few I like well enough to purchase. If I remember correctly, and I may not, its $5 for 16/oz in a plastic deli container.
