Kosher - especially in Joliet

Hi! One of my buddies is coming in from Oklahoma for a quick visit. It looks like he'll be going through Joliet, through the south side and Gary, on to Maryland. What do you suggest for a Kosher restaurant? I did mention Milt's.

Also in Lakeview, there is Mizrahi on Clark, fast casual and well-executed Israeli food, including felafel, shwarma and (haven't tried the) shnitzel. Also very friendly and engaging staff. It has become a favorite lunch stop for even our non-Jewish hospital employees. You didn't mention travel dates, but Mizrahi, and I imagine most if not all kosher restaurants, is closed until April 8 in observance of Passover.

That's okay, it's next Saturday.

....There is also Bebe's Kosher Deli in the French Market. Those are really the only ones I can think of not in Rogers Park/Skokie/and even farther north and northwest. The Chicago Rabbinical Council website has a good online guide if they are looking for additional resource info while in the Chicago area.

All kosher restaurants will be closed during the day on Saturdays for Sabbath, some might open post-sundown for dinner, but unlikely this time of year as sundown gets later. Next Saturday is still Passover until sundown, so finding an open restaurant is doubtful. During Passover, not only are there many dietary restrictions, observant Jews won't use the same dishes, utensils, prep tools, etc as they do the rest of the year, so it is not realistic for restaurants to be open during this holiday.

AH, gotcha. He did say it didn't have to be Kosher per se, but Kosher friendly, so no shellfish, pork-heavy, etc.

In that case, how about a quick stop at GNR Calumet Fisheries for some of their smoked salmon for the road?

Other than the University of Chicago (which is not really a restaurant), there are no kosher restaurants on the south side or in the south suburbs, at least, none on the listing in the Chicago Rabbinical Council Guide to Jewish Chicago.

I haven't heard of any non-kosher Jewish delis there, either, at least no further south than Manny's and Eleven City Diner, both in the South Loop. If he's willing to drive a bit out of his way from his trip across I-80, I'd send him to Manny's, which is open on Saturdays. It's a classic Jewish deli, and it sounds like that's exactly what he's looking for.

Also in the South Loop, Half Sour recently opened at 755 S Clark St

Not open on weekends, but don't forget MetroKlub 733 W. Madison

The "Kosher" requirement here is pretty loose.
