Tried out Bawarchi Biryanis last night. It might be a chain that's in 20 states, but it sure seemed like (recently-departed from this space) 7 Spices to me. I only tried goat biryani (one of four goat biryanis on the huge menu!) and an order of samosas, and both were excellent, vibrantly-spiced and very reminiscent of the quality & prep at 7 Spices. I suspect they kept the same cooks?
I had the Goat Dum Biryani, which I think was the 'normal' one, but there were also Avakai Biryani Goat, Gongura Biryani Goat, and Ulavacharu Biryani Goat. I was asking the owner about the differences--and some of this was getting lost in translation--but he said one was with mango, and another (I believe the ulavacharu) with 'horse gram', which apparently is a 'wonder legume', but I remember when I had a dish at 7 Spices with horse gram it tasted a little like...dirt. FYI, consumer beware with anything goat that one has to watch for sharp hidden bones that could crack a bicuspid at any time.
At 7:00 there were only 3 parties dining in, but there were at least 4 carry-out orders, so this place might have some legs. I'm encouraged.
