From today's Morsels:
Hot, Hot, Hot
Mindy Segal, the wildly talented pastry chef at MK (868 N. Franklin St.; 312-482-9179), will no doubt break some hearts - and melt others- with her latest announcement: She's leaving MK on August 16th and opening her own place, HotChocolate (1747 N. Damen Ave.), in Bucktown by year's end. The 60-seat establishment will be a cafe (think steak frites and homemade sourdough breadsticks), dessert haven (brioche and chocolate chip sandwiches), and cake business (seven-inch square milk chocolate toffee cakes). "I'm so excited, I can't wait," says Segal. She's not the only one: Her father wants to work in the office and her mother wants to work out front. "Just get ready," Segal gushes. "Because I'm doing desserts that I've never done before and they are hot hot hot hot." (BTW: Don't cry for MK: Segal is leaving her staff and her recipes, and she has Michael Kornick's blessing.)
I love what Mindy has done and MK and look forward to trying out HotChocolate later this year...
