Three of us went to Birrierias Ocotlan (4007 E. 106th St), a place Trixie & I have passed several times enroute to our sadly terminated pilgrimages to Tacos del Pacifico. As we took the lake route from home, we would always pass this place with the hope of maybe someday stopping in. For me, that day was yesterday.
Birrierias Ocotlan is no relation to the regularly talked about Birrieria Reyes de Ocotlán in Pilsen (1322 West 18th St). The owner of this establishment said that he’s been open several years and that the owner of Reyes de Ocotlan was an employee of his a number of years ago.
The broth of the birria itself here was pretty nice but the lovely, moist chunks of goat with its small amount of goat fat was really the dish’s highlight. Not overly spiced.
The family that runs this place couldn’t have been nicer.
I don’t claim to be a birria authority or anything of the sort but I enjoyed this version about as much as anywhere.
For those of you who are well versed about this dish, please check it out….I’m curious about your assessments.
