Tonight my wife decided to pick up dinner on the way home and stopped by Renga-Tei for take out. She and my son had the usual suspects - a tonkatsu for him and a salmon and chicken teriyaki combo for her. She just casually mentioned that she had gotten me the grilled snapper special so I didn't really pay any attention, though in the back of my mind I was thinking red snapper fillet kinda ho hum.

As I opened it up I was shocked to discover not a fillet but a perfectly grilled split snapper head and collar. It looked like a red snapper but could have been a mutton. At any rate, I dug into it before either of them could start pestering me for a taste. Lightly salted and char grilled to perfection it was - succulent. Moist and fatty and just really delicious. For those who have had it, think Katsu yellowtail collar but of course on a smaller scale. Nevertheless, it was a good size head - I would estimate the owner of the head probably weighed in around 5 pounds or so, and it came with rice, miso soup and a nice sauce for dipping, though it really didn't need any. The best part - it was $8.95. My only complaints were:
    1) it wasn't scaled so well so some of the delicious skin wasn't very edible.
    2) we didn't dine in so I couldn't order seconds

I wasn't sure if this was a regular special or a 'get it while it lasts' special so thought I'd post this alert in case anyone might be interested.

    Mr. T,

Renga-Tei is a favorite and the snapper collar sounds excellent, thanks for the heads up.

    Enjoy,
