Not that I'm a connoisseur of such places (except when eating with my in-laws), but are they a franchise or do they all buy their tables, chairs, signage and equipment from the same one supplier? I know they're usually individually owned, but THEY ALL LOOK THE SAME right down to the round neon signs in the window and the metal curved-back chairs. Who's the mystery corporation behind these outposts? Is it based in Manchuria?

I think they all have common ownership, i.e. members of the same family. Around a year ago, they were all cited for fair employment practices violations (they weren't paying any of the buffet slaves any overtime) and fined. At the time, I think the news was reporting that they were all family members.

The food is remarkably uniform from place to place as well, leading me to believe it is pre packaged and jsut reheated on premises.

I posted recently about how crappy I find them and how I miss the truly family run storefront buffets.
I used to think the brain was the most important part of the body. Then I realized who was telling me that.
