I may enjoy a Burrito House burrito after a night out, but I'm not going to pretend that it's comparable to anything served at Casa de Samuel. It's just pretty good for a North side burrito joint. Alpine makes a good sub using mediocre (some might say crappy) ingredients. It satisfies, but it's not in the same league as Rivera or Bari.

    Yes.

Let's nip the semantics discussion right here and stick with the matters of importance like Alpine itself or other good places to eat around Harlem/North.

No one's mentioned another dive I adore, River Forest Grill.

This reminds me of the South Park Episode where the Giant Douche and the Turd Sandwich were up for school mascot.

That episode reminds me of the episode where John Edwards was up for the award of "Biggest Douche in the Universe" and beat out a 6-foot-tall walking, talking douche.

Actually, C Gleam, it was John Edward, the guy who hosts "Crossing Over". Not John Edwards, the guy dominated as YPW's Biggest Douche in the Universe.

Right right, typo. I think the problem is that they just kept saying "John Edward's a douche, Kyle!"

Driving south on Narragansett today we noted the signs for Red Ginger had been papered over with Jasmine Rice. This seemed a little strange because we knew there was a restaurant using that name on Grand just east of Harlem. Was proved to be the proper tense. The old location had signs in the windows saying moved to 3103 North Narragansett.

We had eaten in or had carryout from Jasmine Rice several times. Except for the buffet it served fairly basic Ameri-Thai of no great distinction. Buffet had the usual demerits. If MIL didn't live nearby, we wouldn't have eaten there more than once and probably not at all.

Our one experience with Red Ginger last summer was not good but also raised the question as to whether anybody from management was on the premises at the time. Red Ginger had an interesting concept. I wonder whether they were unable to execute consistently, whether the location was a problem or both.

It's a stretch to call it part of your neighborhood, but I think the carryout empanadas at Buenos Aires Liquor and Deli are as good as any in the city. It's on the corner of Belmont and Central, and the Argentine wine selection is more robust than any in Chicago, by far.

This was the closest Thai restaurant to our house when it was on Grand. Ordered from there a few times. Really liked their shrimp and vegetables in garlic sauce. Overall their menu is pretty average, nothing fantastic.

They just might be the best fries in the city and the ka-bob, while hardly standard fare, is mildly addictive. Just don't be scared by the way it looks.

I've been a fan of Mr. D's Shish-Ka-Bob sandwich for years but have failed to convinced many to try. The fries though, while having the potential for greatness, and fresh cut the same way as Gene and Jude's, are too often fried carelessly. The tomatos though (!) have been first rate even in the deep dark off season. (Photo taken 3/09/06).

Be wary, after many visits I've only seen the same two people working and they keep very limited hours. I will post exact address, etc, by edit later. Very popular with the streets and san croud.

There's actually 3 people that work there that I've seen. The only one I know the name of is Mike, the owner. The woman working there is his wife and their son is also there occasionally.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Maria's. I haven't been in a while, but I assume they are still in business. They have two locations:

    Maria's Mexican Restaurant
    1901 N Harlem Ave,
    Chicago 60707
    At W Cortland St
    Phone: 773-622-2277

    9440 W Foster Ave,

    At River Rd
