My wife and I are going out to dinner for our anniversary tonight. She mentioned Mexican so I decided that we should try something new. After reading about La Q we've decided to try either Glen Ellyn or Aurora. Is the GE location atill associated with the others? I didn't see it on the La Q web site.

So... Is the menu at GE the same? We were thinking about GE because I know where it is, but Aurora is actually closer to us (we're in Batavia). I saw a message that indicated that the food in Aurora was better. Would those of you who have tried both still agree?

Finally, does either location take reservations?

    thanks in advance!

I just enjoyed my birthday dinner with family at the Glen Ellyn La Quebrada 2 weeks ago [and meant to post, sorry  ]. The only other LaQ I've been to is the Cicero one, and the menus are pretty different. Glen Ellyn's menu is fairly short; the usual Mexican antijitos suspects [hope I spelled that right] and a few specials [my meal was chicken breasts con rajas, which was a perfectly satisfying meal, but nothing to salivate heavily over]. There weren't a lot of fish dishes, no goat, nothing, really that wouldn't be comfortable in a west suburban shopping mall. That disclaimer aside, the tortillas were freshly made and everything was well prepared. My mom was very happy with her chicken fajatas. [The spicy gene clearly comes from my dad's side of the family.]

Other notes: the restaurant in Glen Ellyn is much bigger than you'd guess from the strip mall exterior, and the menu lists the other LaQ sites, strongly suggesting that they're still all related.

My guess is that you'll have a chowier experience in Aurora.

    Happy Anniversary!

Aurora, Aurora, Aurora. I have been to both at least two times, and Aurora is much better.

GE is not bad, mind you, but Giovanna is right, they shortened up the menu a bit, and the whole vibe is less interesting.

For a celebration, Aurora is also better since it will most likely be more crowded and there will be some musical entertainment.

Did I say you should go to Aurora? It is on route 25 (the one on the east side of the river - that is 25, right? I always forget which is which) about a mile south of downtown on the west side. Fairly hard to miss. A much easier hike for you.

    Yeah, that's 25... I always forget, too!

Thanks, Dickson and Giovanna... I think it will be Aurora! I'll report back tomorrow.

    Ron,

My wife and I, at Dickson's suggestion, enjoyed our one visit to the Aurora La Quebrada. It compared very favorably to the Cicero location, in fact I may even prefer Aurora.

    Enjoy,

Sorry for the delay... Busy weekend and week so far...

We had a great meal at La Q in Aurora on Friday night. We arrived at about 7:30pm and I would say that the place was about half full. While we were there they had a steady flow of people, but it never filled up. the decor is clean but minimal and the staff was very friendly. In fact, I suspect that they switched waitress stations to give us a wiatress that spoke english (I speak very little spanish and my wife speaks none).

We started off with two margaritas, which were very good, but slightly different that what I am used to. They had a brighter green color and a flavor to them that I couldn't quite place. Not a bad flavor, just different. We also were served a basket of warm tortilla chips and a bowl of salsa. the salsa was served hot (temperature-wise), which I am also not used to. The salsa was chunky and had a nice heat to it. We ordered guacamole to munch on while we looked over the menu and received a large portion of fresh, chunky guac with lots of tomato, onions and cilantro.

The menu was different than what I saw online. the Barbacoa de Chivo estilo Teloloapan was not on the menu in the restaurant, which was a dissapointment since that is was I had Planned on trying. I ended up with Carne de LaQuebrada, which is a nice-sized portion of strip steak, grilled, and then covered with a sauce of tomatoes, peppers and onions (molcajete sauce) with melted cheese on top. It was very good! My wife ordered Pollo en Ajillio, which is a pounded chicken breast covered in ajillo sauce, a spicy garlic sauce. It was also very good, but maybe a little too spicy for her. At one point she told me that her lower lip was numb!

Overall, we enjoyed our experience and we will go back for more!
