Cambridge House replacement

Can anyone suggest a similar place for breakfast? I'm not looking for anything gourmet. Eggs, crispy shredded hash browns, corned beef hash, (fried until it's got a little crust) and that wonderful thick seseme toast. I'm staying at the Marriott on Michigan Ave and would like to walk.

Those places are getting fewer and farther between down there. I mourn their loss. You can get everything you're looking for, though, in slightly more upscale surroundings (and also at a higher level of quality and execution, for not a whole lot more money) at the Oak Tree, which is on the 6th floor of the 900 N. Michigan (Bloomingdale's) building, about a half-mile north from where you're staying.

I know the building but I'm not familar with the Oak Tree. I will definatly check it out. After breakfast I can wander through Williams Sonoma. Thanks!!

I'd recommend the West Egg Cafe. It's a good breakfast/lunch spot, pretty cheap, very quick service for people who don't want to take long work lunches. In terms of coffee shop fare, you pretty much can't go wrong there. Hash browns aren't shredded, though. They're in small cubes and are very serviceable, though by no means the best you'll ever have. Never had the corned beef hash.

Come to think of it, I can't vouch that the hash browns at the Oak Tree are shredded, so if the precise form of your hash browns can be a dealbreaker, caveat emptor. I also can't swear they'll have the exact toast you're specifying. I can tell you they have all the standard coffeeshop/diner breakfast items (including, I'm pretty sure, corned beef hash) available any time of (not a 24-hour) day, at a level of execution that's beyond the ordinary. I predict if you go you'll be pleased.

I think your best bet, if the walk isn't too far, would be Tempo (at Rush and Delaware, if memory serves). I'm not in the are very often but it's a storied breakfast joint of decades' standing. Maybe the last of a breed.

Anyone who gets there with any regularity should chime in with particulars.

Tempo's at Chestnut and State. When it was across the street, it was a good choice for breakfast in the neighborhood, but I haven't been there since they relocated.

Tempo is still good. If you're looking for the "feel" of a Cambridge House only nicer, it's a good choice. And if it's a nice day, they have tables out on the sidewalk in front.

Another North Michigan Ave. restaurant that has quality breakfast items similar to Cambridge House is the Original Pancake House just west of Mich Ave. The restaurant frequently has lines, especially on weekends, but that's the price of quality at a reasonable price in downtown Chicago.
