Last night I went to my first "30 Wines for 30 dollars" tasting at the Tasting Room, and I had a great time. The tasting took place on the second floor so we got the spectacular view in addition to all the wines and hors-d'oeuvres. The wines were from Spain and Portugal, and were divided between 7 tables, each table having a mix of whites and reds; most also had a cava and a port or sherry. The people at the tables doing the pouring were very informative and friendly, and were not hesitant to pour a second taste (or a third!) of any wine that we particularly liked. Several servers were constantly circulating with a nice selection of appetizers appropriate for the wines, and there were trays of Spanish cheese and bread out on several small tables in both rooms.

I really don't know much about Spanish wine, so I can't speak to the depth of the wine list, but there were about 45 different wines to try, and they certainly all tasted unique to this novice. While there were only one or two that I didn't like at all, there were far more that I truly enjoyed. The retail prices ranged from $7.99 to $45, so it was a nice chance to taste wines that I couldn't otherwise afford, as well as sample some that I could buy without breaking the bank. And so of course, I bought a couple of bottles of the less expensive wines which I am very excited about drinking, in particular a white port (served chilled!).

So, samples of well over 30 wines, tasty Spanish appetizers/tapas, a little oeno-education, all for $30. I definitely plan on attending the next 30 for $30, which is set to take place on the third Tuesday of October, and is all about Shiraz.

    Geli,

Thanks for the report. We've been disappointed in the tastings at Sam's lately- too many people and not enough good selections at the grand tastings means lots of jostling and fighting crowds - and would like to try something different, so this should be some motivation to get to the shiraz tasting on Oct. 17.

One question: I can't tell from the web site if we need to make reservations for the monthly tastings. Can we just show up, or do I need to call ahead?

You don't need to make a reservation, and at last night's tasting there was plenty of elbow room. I would recommend getting there right at the beginning (they go from 6 to 8pm) simply so you have time to try all the wines without rushing. Also it gives you time to stop and drink some water as necessary!
