Zanzibar has now opened in that Kenmore/Bryn Mawr spot. I drove by the other day and it looked like Sweet Occasions with a new name. Haven't been in yet though.

I saw that place. It looked similar but not the same. I'll check it out soon

I just loved the steak roti and baba ghannoush the last time I was in Venice.

This is like when Cedars of Lebanon in Hyde Park closed, moved down the street, and reopened with yuppified food as "Cedars Mediterranean Kitchen" a few years ago. God forbid someone should mention the Middle East, or - gasp - North Africa in a restaurant name or description anymore. Roti won't go closer than Gibraltar (where a more authentic combo plate would involve a hamburger and bangers and mash with a Guinness).

Thanks for the lead, Mike. A devilishly clever parody of deep-think marketing BS--if only. (It's like when you read a story in the New York Times and forget that you're not reading a story in The Onion.) 340 words to say that they serve couscous, falafel and kabobs.

I suspect it was used internally and shouldn't have ended up on their website without some reworking for real people. When I read that stuff about exploring who they are to discover their brand essence, I had an instant sensation of being stuck in a conference room at the beginning of an excruciating all-afternoon brainstorming session.

I can't confirm this for sure, but it seems Humboldt Pie over at Augusta and California may be shut. The gate has been locked for a week or so now. Has anyone heard anything? I wasn't a huge fan, but they weren't a bad option in a neighborhood with few choices nearby. And the free WiFi was nice.

The Lao Sze Chuan on Ogden in Downers Grove looked like it had paper up in the windows.

As was reported upstream, the three restos on that block with the same owner (including Omaggio and Uberburger) closed a few months ago. Uberburger has reopened with a slightly different name, it's not clear if it's the same owner.

From what I have heard, LPA and Omaggio may reopen shortly with a common menu.

In chatting with the owner @ Flying Saucer (not Rebecaa, the Aussie chap) on California- he tells me that HUMBOLDT PIE is closed.

And-
in case any Entrepreneurs are reading this- is rentable as a fully equipped Restaurant.
The "ask" is $2500 per month.
Kinda steep- given the 'hood.
IMHO.

That's really unfortunate about Humboldt Pie. Granted, the pizza was bad, but the wi-fi and coffee were always nice to have around the corner.

i had only ever had the Margherita pizza, but i thought it was quite decent... and as a coffee shop, it seemed like they had a lot of customers the times I visited...

It's a shame their definition of their namesake hood was so small; perhaps if they delivered to more than the few cute blocks of HP they'd still be open.

Sara Lee Corp. is closing its South Side kosher hot dog and meat processing plant, 1000 W. Pershing, leaving about 185 people without jobs.

The Downers Grove-headquartered food maker is exiting the kosher meat business, cutting its Best's Kosher, Sinai Kosher, Shofar and Wilno brands. Sara Lee -- which owns Hillshire Farm, Jimmy Dean and Ball Park brands -- has been trimming brands to focus on areas of business in which it believes it can be most profitable. It sold its sauces and dressings business in September.

The kosher meat plant, as well as the Sinai Kosher outlet store located on the premises, will close on or before Jan. 30, the company said. Sara Lee plans to sell the facility and property.

I have heard - but have not been by the place personally to confirm - that my favorite bar in Chicago, Hourglass (3658 W Lawrence), has closed for good ... possibly relocating to the suburbs, but without any of their wonderful medieval-picnic kitsch. I want to cry.

Closed, not closing? That sucks. Like losing a loved one you haven't kept up with or seen for a while for me.

There's a post over on Chowhound that says Hourglass will reopen December 1 at 9850 N Milwaukee in Des Plaines.

Hmm, looked up that address and that's where El Sueno was. Interesting. Glad to know it's turning into something good!

Maybe some lights were on or something, but I've driven past there many times in about the last 2 months, on days of the week and times of day when they would have been open and lights are off inside, sign is turned off. No cars in the lot. News of another restaurant/bar opening up at that address pretty much confirms it.

Your post of this prompted me to check KK's site, and apparently even the location in Rosemont that my family often went to after picking up friends at O'Hare has closed! Looks like the Elk Grove location is now the closest one to O'Hare.

The neighborhood newspaper News-Star has a story behind the closings of Sweet Occasions and Sweet Thang Bakeries:

"Sweet and sour: Workers allege bakery owner still owes them thousands in back pay"

Has anyone tried / have any info on a new Greek Restaurant named 'Byblos' - it is on Peterson west of Western ave (right next to Katsu)??

In Logan Square near Fullerton and California, where Sai Mai Thai used to be there is now a sign for "Anong Thai." I'm pretty sure I got the spelling right, though I was driving by quickly.

Has anyone been to It's India in Skokie? It looks like it shares space with Don's Fishmarket.
