Finally found out what's opening in the former Trader Vic's spot in the Viagra Triangle (1030 N State). Connie's Pizza. While the pizza isn't bad, does the area really need yet another stereotypical american/pizza place? Serious question. As a resident near by, I was actually kind of let down when I saw the sign on the side of Newberry Plaza. At least Paul Kahan is injecting a little difference there with Nico and I guess you could say that Jellyfish not far away counts as part of the overall area. Still, a big fat meh. Set to open any day now I believe. I guess they have a wood fire oven though, so that's good.

P.S I see this is old news via Eater. Guess I'm late to the party.

I haven't yet been but Upton's Breakroom, featuring a vegan menu, is now open at their new factory location at Grand and Damen.

I was there a couple of years ago and had the ribs. They were bland meat jello with an overly-sweet sauce. You might like them if you're a fan of the Gale Street Inn/Fireplace Inn ribs.

Eh... it's OK. The name suggests a barbecue joint but it really isn't. It's a slightly upscale take on standard sports-bar grub. Something to consider if you're in the area; not worth a special trip just to go there.

Ripasso (1619 N Damen) closed, and is reopening as Starland. Ripasso served well executed pasta, but never quite caught on with the neighborhood. I have to admit that every time I ate there, I wished there was more on the menu. Starland will be modern comfort food. The trial menu they had printed up this weekend looks good.

I read the Eater article about this. The owner of Ripasso said the neighborhood was constantly changing and they had no consistency in business. I really thought Ripasso would do well in that neighborhood, although the one time I went there I remember the food being good but the atmosphere left something to be desired.

Maybe they had no consistency because people didn't go back for a reason

Lou Malnati's "appears" to be moving into the Golden Angel. I don't mind this as my preferred 24 hour diner in this immediate area was Jeri's anyways. Plus, I like Lou's pizza!

Also, a "Gastro Sport's Pub" moving into the prime corner that Bowman's occupied. I'm disappointed already.

Looks like a concept from the Old Town Social gang is going into the old Zealous space, which they've been quietly working on for the last two months. Given that both Scoozi and Citizen Bar continue to draw well, there is an audience in the immediate neighborhood, but they're gonna need to lure folks from beyond western River North to make it.

Also in the nabe: Japonais is being rebranded as a Morimoto-linked concept soon, too.

Burke's Bacon Bar, a mini sandwich shop, will open sometime next week next to David Burke's Primehouse in the building that houses the James Hotel.

The New York Post is reporting that New York's David Rabin, with partners Larry Poston and Johnny Swet, will open an outpost of their Jimmy cocktail lounge behind the Bacon Bar in about a week.

The location on Clark Street is closing. The one on Broadway and Granville will remain open.
