The old Johnny Casserole (4019 N. Damen) has new signage for Nomad Kitchen. I couldn't find anything with that name locally after a very superficial search online, though there is a restaurant with that name in Wa. state. About a month ago the front windows were open and I briefly chatted with a guy who was working inside. I don't know if he's connected to Nomad Kitchen, but he said they do catering and were using the space for that and would be doing some pop-ups.

It looks like we won't have much longer to wait before Nonnina (340 N. Clark St., 312-822-0077) makes its debut. The restaurant, by Tony Priolo (Piccolo Sogno), partner Ciro Longobardo (ditto), general manager/partner Ricardo Brizuela (ditto) and chef/partner Chris Macchia, is hoping for a late-June debut.

I ate there for dinner when the dining room was full, and I never thought it was overly noisy. Not quiet, to be sure, but no worse than average these days, and not at all a place where you leave with your ears ringing (like Tanta, Publican, etc).

Received this update from Hewn bakery yesterday AM:

"What were we thinking? Well, I guess we are better at baking than construction! We have to delay our opening to Wednesday, June 15th at 7am. Unless (knock on wood, knock on lots of wood) something really unexpected happens we will have a full line of pastries, breads and sandwiches ready for all of you on that day. We really appreciate all of your patience and support! We can’t wait to reopen our new and improved Hewn.

    See you soon,

On our visit, not only could we not hear each other; the waiter, through no fault of his own, couldn't correctly hear what was being ordered--resulting in service errors.

    Czech Plaza Restaurant
    June 11 at 4:18pm ·

    Dear Friends,
It has been 27 years that we have had the pleasure of serving you at our humble establishment. Three generations of our family ( mom & dad, kids and grandkids) have worked here in those years. In our time here, we have met many wonderful people, many who we now consider friends. So it is with a very heavy heart when we tell you that our family, the Drozda's will be retiring.
Our mother, Babi, as she is affectionately known to everyone, has many job descriptions. Owner, cook, manager, mom, and grandmother. She has been in the kitchen since we started in 1989, 27 years in total, so when she decides it is time to retire, it is time to say goodbye.
July 18 will be the Drozda families last day here. We would love to see all our customers before then, so that we may say goodbye and thank you all for leaving us with so many wonderful memories.
    Fond wishes to all,
Zdenka & Family ( Lido Kevin Jon )
    Beats & Family ( Jack Stefi B.B. )
Mom & Dad, Laddy and Jerry

The Restaurant will reopen August 3 under new ownership. It will remain a Czech Restaurant. Most of the current employees will stay.

Clodagh and Amy Lawless, sisters of Billy Lawless Jr. of Loop restaurants Gage and Acanto, are set to open the Dearborn, "an urban American tavern," in an 8,000-square-foot space on the first floor of Block 37, this week. The restaurant has been holding friends and family practice-run dinners and was looking to open June 16, a spokesperson confirmed.

Made it the newly-opened Firefin Poke Shop on LaSalle just south of Madison. Pretty good. Very tiny space, not meant for eating in (small number of stools with a counter). Not sufficiently distinguishable from Aloha Poke at the French Market with the one exception being they have only 2 sizes small and large. The large is roughly $15 and is a decent size. Aloha started with laughably small small/large sizes but have since added an appropriately-sized larger serving, also at about $15. So not quite "$5 footlong" territory but a nice option for the Loop.

Construction is moving along at Seafood City. That place is going to be HUUUUUUUGE. It looks to be at least a third bigger than the Super K-Mart it is (thankfully) replacing. Hopefully, there will be several restaurant offerings once it's built.

Steadfast, the Fifty/50 Group's first foray into fine-dining, is almost ready to descend on the Loop — bringing with it what may be one of Chicago's most ambitious bar menus. The restaurant will open in the new Kimpton Gray hotel at 39 S. LaSalle St. at the end of June, owners say, with chefs Chris Davies and Chris Texeira at the helm.

It's actually a return to its roots in Evanston. It began as a spin-off of a LaRosa Pizza on Main St. east of Chicago Ave. So, it's going to be somewhat west of the original location.

That happened a year ago. And the city was ready to undertake another, similar (and similarly dreadful) foray at DIK, but fortunately Dave decided he didn't need it.

Yes, but the balance on the loan is still outstanding. Public outcry killed the loan to DIK, not some sudden attack of altruism on the part of Mr. Glatt. He certainly had no issue with accepting public funds when DIK relocated to Chicago Avenue in 2000.
