Thanks all, you are looking good today, and is that a new shirt?

As I said, many times for other restaurants I have found DIFFERENT menus on different websites, yelp is not the only place claiming to have photos of menus. And of course, more than half the places claiming to have a menu in web searches only have "oops we don't have that one". Which is why I had not looked myself. And also many times the online menus from places like Yelp are obsolete, so I wasted my time doing advance research.

    (provocative comments deleted)

When I saw "20 pages" and the first one was fuzzy and canted, so I knew I would have to open up each page in a separate window, and enlarge them to the point that I could only see maybe 20% of each at a time, that's 100 screens to look at. I almost gave up, but went further, saw some were in better focus, then realized there were less than 20 different pages.

In this case, I will just go early and look at it live, I have other questions which could probably be answered more easily live than spending hours poring over online photos. And maybe some items are unavailable, or there are daily specials I would want more than anything printed.

Recently for another restaurant (the hot pot place in Evanston) I spent a lot of time planning what to order FROM THEIR OWN WEBSITE, but when I got there, the current menu was as completely different (and more limited) as it could be and still be the same type of food. That is not the first time a restaurant's own website listed thing I counted on to order, but upon arrival I am disappointed.

The best way to view menu photos online, especially Yelp, is through your mobile browser or the provider's app. Much easier to zoom in.

This is exactly what I was talking about. There's no way of guaranteeing accuracy, so it's a fool's errand trying to convince yourself you've found one that does.

OK, thanks GWIV, previously I somebody had mentioned "appetizer portion" of goat stew, but they must have meant the single serving $11 vs the $30 table cooked "for two". I had not looked at the "for 2" page, so thought the glowing reviews were for the $11 portion. I had my hopes up that a "new" menu added a smaller yet portion, so I could order it and something else.

Since, AFAICS, glowing recommendations are for the table cooked portion, I'm not sure if I want to spend $30 for just myself, and it would probably take longer than Panther has for his lunch, so I'd be eating alone. If that, might as well just come back alone some other day. Not much comment about the single serving, which I think I eventually found a picture of on the restaurant's thread. The big portion shows a lot of fresh greens on top, if language permits, maybe i'll ask if the smaller portion has the same, just cooked in so not visible, and if the bigger portion has more garnishes, skip the goat stew this time.

I can't find any reports on what I had thought of as alternatives, the squid or octopus soup/stew. So I don't know what I will do. I could wait and hope to find somebody to go with for the table cooked portion, and get something else now. Or get the $11 portion and something else and take home half of each.

Did I just miss it or did the trib arcticle not include Kogii Kogii? THANK YOU SO MUCH for that, I hadn't followed that link before just now because I had been at my limit for trib articles without paying them $$, but I guess the limit expired, so I downloaded that for later. Again, THANKS. I wonder if I can copy links to a different browser to get around the limit?

Also, FWIW, doing google searches by address gave a sports bar and this restaurant. Street view cleared that up. The sports bar is 5707, a beauty salon is 5707 B (what happened to A?) , the restaurant is 5707 1/2 and the next store is 5709 (vacant in street view). I don't recall seeing the "1/2" in ANY of the references to the restaurant on the internet. Whoops, google maps has their little push pin at BOTH 5707 and 5707B (both wrong).

Also, FWIW (probably only worth proving again how much bad info there is on the internet), Google thinks they open at 10 AM, which not only disagrees with yelp, but seems completely unlikely for ANY restaurant, especially on a weekday. Didn't answer phone at 10:15.

I would have no problem splitting the order with you.

As far as time goes maybe you can arrive at Noon so it can get going and be ready when I arrive at 12:15?

I do have a certain amount of flexibility with my lunch hour. My internal drop dead time to leave is usually around 1:15 although I would prefer it to be a little earlier.

Friday Lunch Out (3/22 from 12:15 to 1:15)

Good to be back on my regular schedule!

    Recommended and well visited...

Chun Ju (or Jeon Ju or Jeon Joo or Jeonjoo or Jun Joo or Golden Chopstick or Korean Restaurant) :)
5707 Dempster Street, Morton Grove, IL 60053

I do know the Goat Stew (yum sul tang or jeuk suk yum so bok um) is popular but I might explore some of the other items on the menu and save the stew for others. :)

What an outstanding visit! Another less popularized place.

I didn’t need a menu as I was going off of the recommendations on the thread.

    F82BB28A-FCC1-4CB9-B6B2-FE392A8D9952.jpeg Fried Mandoo

Nicely fried with a thin wrapper. Very tasty filling and it held up to reheating very well. Our favorite of My Bride and I as a snack.

    92856296-1843-4A4D-A848-1985B0932FB2.jpeg Panchan

My photo is almost identical to others. Everything good and crisp (where needed) and I almost missed the fish strips as they were cut thin and small.

    B72289D1-0B67-48FA-9FDE-1F9291F12111.jpeg Chapchae

A surprisingly good dish. A hint of heat and the blending of noodles and vegetables kept it interesting.

This pancake dish did have fish and the flavor was present (I am not a fish fan) but not overwhelming so. This was another big hit over the weekend as a snack.

I love soup and seeing how this was also recommended...

    8745989F-6045-465E-92BA-085F4DADD801.jpeg Yook Gae Jang

I actually didn’t have room for more than a taste but once at home I wolfed it down. :) Wow! Spicy! Gave me pause a few times.

Tender beef, vegetables still had some crunch. Very good. I do know that soup as a main course is popular worldwide and would consider it again as a main part of the meal.

A little disappointed that it didn’t come boiling in a stone bowl.

    The primary reason to visit...

Jeuk Suk Yum So Bok Um
    https://youtu.be/Byp1suRxZqg

... was pretty good. It had been simmering for a while by the time I arrived and the vegetables had cooked down. The goat had a touch of gaminess and was a touch tough. Maybe cooked too long which would also explain the lack of broth.

We had to ask for the crispy rice (maybe we were a step ahead of the waitress) and she brought out the ingredients, set it on a low heat and walked away. Returned a short time later and looked like she was going to serve it up.

    9A8246A9-DD52-4ADC-A7F9-BDA5A06B9AAB.jpeg

I had her stop and mentioned we would like it crispy so she patted it down and walked away again.

Seeing as how it had no browning at this point I turned up the heat a bit for her. Finally it had a few crispy sections but nothing like we had seen.

Another highlight of my stay up here. Supposed to be 3 weeks and it is standing at 6 months with no end in sight.

Thanks to all for the recommendation!

Surprised no mention of Buncha Hanoi in this exhaustive & sticky Glenview thread. Isn't it next door to SGD?

I went a few weeks ago and loved it. Nicely chargrilled meats were the star of the show + lots of fiddly fun to compose bites of herbage, noods, & mellow nước chấm.

    Plans for the week...

Sorry for the late notice for Brew Day!

Monday Brew Day (3-25 from 5:00 to 6:00)

    Granite City
    992 Willow Rd, Northbrook

Yeah, I lmow. It's a chain. But on my last visit the beers were solid, the chicken chunks were the best I ever had and I picked up a cool insulated growler.

    Good enough to return.

Next week I'll be back at Macushla on Tuesday.

Friday Lunch Out (3-29 from 12:10 to 1:00)

    Mi Restaurante
1742 E Kensington Rd, Mt Prospect

Looking for a change up from Asian. The recommended items here are some of my favorites. :)

Hopefully I can meet you there on Friday. My go-to lunch is their torta milanesa, add avocado, but I've enjoyed just about everything -- Monica's at Palatine & Milwaukee is a notch above, but Mi Restaurante (or M I Restuarante if you believe the electronic sign) is walkable for us.

In Highland Park, its sister operation is Once Upon A Bagel. You are a known soup lover, you might want a tub of their Mish-Mash Soup with a bagel included. A friend and I would often split it, then they would inquire what type of bagel she wanted. Two bagels!

We never let them split the soup, we would get the tub of soup and two small bowls. We felt we got more soup and stuff than when they did it. Also my friend and I could split some things and trade-off others.

Had a great trip and company and it was just what I was hoping for. Nothing exotic, just nice basic Mexican food.

    F44FA8EF-ACF7-4095-B8D6-3C0665FB59C5.jpeg Table Sauces

Red had a good amount of fire in it. :) It is good to approach that upper end.
Green was creamy with a unique flavor. We debated for a moment, not Avacado, not Tomatillo (although that was my guess).

    931AE59D-7EBB-46D5-A486-81916AC50883.jpeg Table salsa

... was chunkier than most and was going down smoothly as we had another bowl of chips. Nicely fresh. Not too spicy.

    FAEC55D1-1970-4FDD-BA71-A5BF2F6B4D61.jpeg Carne en su Jugo

I have not had this dish before and with a strong recommendation I ordered it. Rich, rich deep broth and a generous amount of beef (appeared to be the minced taco meat). A nice varety of fresh and cooked vegetables. They have to keep their soup game high to compete with the area Korean places. :)

    57868A83-674B-4C6A-A271-F1DA7C2A823E.jpeg

I had dreamed that this dish would be along the lines of Bulgogi being thinly cut pieces in a pile, rich with it's own gravy made out of it's juices. I had seen a few online preparations where it was not a soup.

    DA89ABD2-17BA-49F4-9C79-8682F61AE68E.jpeg Torta Milanesa w/ Guacamole

This was the item I was most looking forward to and wasn't disappointed. Nicely crisp breaded steak (a little on the thin side), nice fresh vegetables with the Guacamole adding a creaminess. Bun fresh, hollowed out and toasted.

    6A355077-F15E-4BEA-BFD3-CCD6174236C3.jpeg Taco's

    Steak, Pastor and Chorizo
I was planning to eat half of each but ended up going through most of the Steak. Tender without a noticeable char. Good flavor with the onion and cilantro.
Pastor - A sweet flavor to the sauce with a nice flavor of pineapple. If the beef didn't go down so smooth this might of been my favorite.
Chorizo - Not sure why I ordered this as I should of gone with the Picadillo (the Queso Fundido was heavy on the chorizo)

    AF78018A-DFEC-4B13-AB87-98C0C1D1066B.jpeg Queso Fundido
    w/ Chorizo and Peppers

Not on the menu (but one of my favorites). They really didn't understand this dish, it appeared to be a generous amount of chorizo and peppers with cheese sprinkled on top. Not sure if it was even Chihuahua.
There were no tortillas served with this dish and I was looking forward to their housemade tortillas but what I was served was regular packaged ones. Asking they quickly replaced them with the housemade ones. Odd?

    426DB88F-BC1D-4DA6-8D7F-B299E642B181.jpeg Tamale
    Chicken w/ Red

Another item not on the menu (I had seen mention online) (and another of my favorites) and it showed. Good flavor but dry to the point of having difficulty eating it. Reheating at home rendered it inedible,

Well, that was a pretty good visit!

Mostly a deli with one table with 4 chairs and a row of stools at a counter by the windows.

    F914CFB9-2926-4AC1-A9B1-3D5687CA7EE9.jpeg Mish Mosh Chicken Soup

For a Super Bowl I was expecting something bigger. :) Also maybe 2 of each? The kreplack was huge and the matzo ball average. Great broth not too salty nor strong.

Ok, I know I mentioned that I was going to try a different sandwich but how better to judge a Jewish deli?

    49C7ED57-A20F-4F67-8E46-B1A07614CF71.jpeg 1/2 Pastrami and 1/2 Corned Beef

When I order this I always fear it will be 1/2 and 1/2 on the cut but here it was mixed across the sandwich.

Tender, fresh and not piled so high that you couldn’t wrap your mouth around it.

    21C5D421-827E-434B-BCEC-59C345F52989.jpeg Latke

This took a while to make it to the counter. Cooked fresh and deeply giving it a delicious crunch. A little firm but the surprise standout was the accompanying Apple Sauce! Chunky and not too sweet. Maybe housemade?

    9BE5A211-C2D4-40A8-B25C-601725EDC906.jpeg Kugel

Seeing Apple and Raisin and not fully comprehending a dessert kugel I asked if they had plain. Yup! I was expecting something warm and savory but this was cold with a sweet topping. Pretty darn good but I am not one much for dessert.

    Bagel Dog
Not on the menu but I do enjoy a good one. Got it to go and enjoyed it at home. Very good and the bagel was not too thick.

    Bagel Chips
Another last minute buy to eat at home. Very light and not very strongly seasoned. Very good snacking at home.

A great visit! A touch expensive but everything very good.

I have frequented their location in the Palos area (closed recently) for many years but never up here.

    Looking forward to it!

That is surprising they have the two locations so close together (I never noticed)! I believe Harms is also the original location (another bonus)?

Both are must do's for me.

I needed a quick carryout today and figured I'd stop by.

I was imagining two little stalls side by side in the back of the grocery store. Thinking one was a dumpling and the other fried chicken. Well the dumpling was close but the chicken was a full blown (and full menued) Korean.

I was rushed and didn't see the chicken wings (craved) so I ordered Tonkatsu (one of my favorites) and they did a very respectable job! Tender, a little juicy with a nice crunch. Nice slaw salad on the side.

Dumpling? More of a steamed bun. I was expecting something more like soup dumplings or potsticker style. I was wondering how they could charge a fin apiece? :)

My surprise aside it was awesome! A little dash of soy, nicely spiced and not boring at all, wrapper correctly gummy. :)

Wow! Was that a big seating area! 2nd floor nonetheless. I could see how they could have a panchan bar here. Very nice and spacious.

The big dumplings I had last time were definitely dumplings, not like bao or other buns. Pretty sure that dumpling counter has had new stuff each time I've gone.

The wings get placed on the counter next to the register of the big counter when they are ready. They come out pre-packaged in round aluminum to-go containers with plastic dome lids. If it was a slow time, maybe they were not planning on making more. I've gone a few times, and had to wait a few min before the next batch gets placed on the counter.

Planning on working in the Mt P office tomorrow. Gives me an excuse to try to get there, but the office mates will probably vote for Emerson's. I think it's the all day special burger price day. Every one of their "special burgers" is one price, and they do a really respectable job.

Also, Panther, if you wanna make friends at the office. If you can get to "Central Continental Bakery" in the am, and get a "Custard Pecan Edelweiss" coffee cake. I think you'll be pretty popular. It's chock full of butter, pecans, butter, and vanilla custard, (and more butter,) and it is KILLER.

    Panther -
We did wind up going today. The dumplings are called "Pork Small Dumplings" on the menu.

Lunch partner also let me in to her (not so) secret.
The first floor has a table near the registers with a decent amount of prepared foods, pre-packaged for the taking. PLENTY of containers of the wings - probably about 6 or so. They also had pkgs of the rice/fish cake in spicy red sauce as well.
I tried the Bibimbap, wings, and pork small dumplings today. Again, I said that what I had was an absolute steal. The Bibimbap was 6.50, and I finished about 3/4 of it. It was pretty pedestrian compared to going to a real Korean restaurant for it, but this is a grocery store cafe. After I threw some of the korean hot sauces in, all in all, for 6.50, I think it'd be hard for anything to come close to the quality of that meal. It came with miso soup, kimchi, steamed rice, a lil bit of ground pork, a fried (too fried) egg, and a decent selection of veggies. Absolute steal. I did take some pics - I'll throw em in here later.

So, if no wings at the food counter, look downstairs in the store. Both locations had the wings for us today, and...they were really fkn good - as usual. Sticky but not overly sweet, and crunchy as hell. Just a tick of spice at the end. I wish they were a bit spicier, but those things are GOOD.

I've been visiting the brewery at their other location just down the road often enough and enjoyed their appetizers and figured it was time to try their lunch menu in the mothership restaurant proper. I have frequented their location in the Palos area (closed recently) for many years but never up here.

    Looking forward to it!

    Another great visit!

It was too windy to dine on the patio (it wasn’t even setup) but I got a nice seat looking out onto a little natural area. I usually don’t sit with my back to the room.

    6C3C4DE4-4B19-4C34-B798-AB87FDDEAA30.jpeg Fried Mushrooms

I would be surprised if they weren’t housemade. Very juicy but could of been cooked a little more to impart more crust on the breading.

Came with a very good Cocktail Sauce. A nice bite from horseradish.

D6EB62A3-A93C-494A-9DB4-3730A4384C86.jpeg The Hackney Burger with Cheese

Kept it simple, meat, cheese and their housemade rye (they bake in an outbuilding at the Lake location).

The ‘special mixture’ beef had a good grind, not too loose or firm, nice char. When cut, a nice amount of grease pooled on the plate, juicy!

    3707BB6E-2691-47DC-803F-8743934233B6.jpeg Brisket Sandwich

Figuring how they perfected their burger I had high hopes for this but when delivered, they were crushed. Limp, grey slightly red meat, dull without a greasy sheen.

Taking a taste brought it back into favor (flavor? :) ). Tender, pairing well with the bun. A dip in the au jus added some seasoning.

Think about Russell’s BBQ, not smoked but ultra tender with a good beefy flavor. I know it’s not to everyone’s taste but that was the style back then.

Choice of fried perch, tilapia or scallops on Friday’s.

Nice fresh fish but once again cooked too lightly (pale tan color). Cooked throughly. Big order with 6 pieces included. Very nice flavor.

    ...with butter as bread service.

Ya, I know I passed on their signature Onion Loaf but I’ve had it a few times recently on my Lake St beer Tuesday’s.

Arriving the hostess, and as she was seating me, she mentioned she was family. After placing my order I took a moment to go back and talk to her. We chatted the history and changes over the years. I’ll tell you a few stories someday. :)

A good visit! I’m glad I came to the original location.

PS: I don’t think I saw Macushla on the beer menu!?! I might of missed it.

PPS: My contract will be ending May 10th. I haven’t revisited yet but for the last few I will be visiting my favorites.

One of my favorite carryouts is Chinese Egg Foo Young (mushroom) and I have tried two places so far and was not impressed. This time I went to the little hole in the wall closest to work...

    Redstar Restaurant
    909 Greenwood, Glenview

The attachment 053C5BB5-5099-4AEB-B084-C1E6490DA09B.jpeg is no longer available

The actually did a respectable job! They actually put the mushrooms inside of the patty (unlike the other two places in the area that I visited who just put the mushrooms in the gravy). Gravy a nice dark brown color, good thickness, not too salty nor greasy. The patties were nice sized and browned nicely.

I also grabbed an order of Egg Rolls and was excited about how big they were when I opened the package! Obviously housemade, flavor a little lacking but tasty. They had meat or vegetable available and I opted for the meat. Seemed like some sort of plentiful ground meat inside.

I would have to say the best I've had. Egg Foo Young was tops and the Egg Rolls win on size alone. Give them some better flavor and it could be destination worthy as many places have small of prefab ones.

No only am I going to revisit my favorite sit down restaurants at the end of the weeks I am also planning to revisit my favorite carry out places. :)

I was really looking forward to this revisit as everything made me happy on my last visit. Today I went with the Egg Foo Young (Mushroom) lunch special with an Egg Roll, choice of Chicken Fried Rice or White, Fortune Cookie.

    D9A5E278-D925-4723-A4BB-86D647B6CF68.jpeg

Wow! 2 full sized patties, nice amount of rice but... The egg roll seemed a lot smaller than I remembered?!? Looking back on my photo from the last visit, I was right.

    Mmmm...

It all still tasted very good and the chicken fried rice was ok too (my first taste).

I might stop by after work someday to confirm the downsized lunch special egg roll vs full sized side order egg roll. :) They are very good so it won't be that much of ordeal.

The best laid plans oft go astray... :)

I am planning one carryout in each of my last few weeks and today I was hoping to go to...

    Los Huaraches
    3482 Milwaukee Ave, Northbrook

... I'm a simple man and a simple (but fairly rare) huarache makes me happy (especially with their very nice bottled red sauce).

But I made the newbie mistake of not checking their hours, Closed Tuesday.

Sat in the lot, thinking over my options, and decided to try a new place here in the nth hour. :)

    Niles Polish Deli
    8705 N Milwaukee Ave, Niles

Oft on my way either to or from home I have been eyeing it for a while. Over the years I have learned that the Polish Deli's will have a hot steamtable with ready to eat food. I had stopped in on a scouting mission several weeks ago to confirm.

Online there have been several complaints about the staff being rude and brusque. Well, They are not natural born English speakers and if you are asking a lot of questions it will tax their patience and the range of their vocabulary.

I had a pretty good idea so we got along fabulously. :)

They do have a lunch special that isn't described. I asked for two meats, kraut and potatoes and it wasn't an issue. Also purchased an item out of the deli case as well.

    9B51D99A-F5FA-4BB7-908F-BD60C79C98BB.jpeg Clockwise from the top

    Paszteciki
... which I gather to be a general word for Pastry? They had 3 varieties available; Meat, Sauerkraut, and Mushroom. I chose the former and the latter. Didn't eat them yet and I will update the post when I do.

    Polish Sausage
A fairly thick skin, great flavor! One thing that surprised me was there was a little bit of a red sauce with some vegetables??? Turned out to be ketchup. :) Some might be offended but I have been known to have some ketchup on my cut polish.

    Potatoes
More boiled than roasted. I usually like a little crusting. Nice, fresh, tasty after sprinkling a little salt.

    Pork Patty
I knew this would be ground, formed (I also had a choice of a breaded patty or chicken), probably without much flavor. Wrong! Actually had a good porky flavor and a touch of juiciness. Might not be this way at the end of the day. :)

    Sauerkraut
Not sweet, a touch creamy, not sour. Just fine. Tasty.

Not shown as I picked up one cold and had it for breakfast over the weekend...
Polish - Kartacze (larger than a Pyzy)
    Lithuanian - Cepelinai
    Swedish - Kroppkakor
Pretty much the traditional. Easy sprinkling of bacon. My Bride fried slices up in butter, until brown and served them plain.

All in all about what I expected. I was planning to have a picnic but ended back at work. Glad I was able to squeeze this one in!
