I also prefer to visit non-chain restaurants too but I had a friend who dragged me along a few times. After all, he was buying.

I have a complaint about your post - I'm tired of all this complaining about people complaining in a complaint thread. If people want to complain about complaints regarding complaints, then they should go start a complaint³ thread.

I dont disagree there are diners in the city of Chicago that make fine burgers - maybe even comparable to Culvers But please tell me of a spot that serves decent cheese-curds and a good frozen custard anywhere in the Chicago city limits (preferably near the North Side), and I'll happily start frequenting it (and talking about it) more than I would Culver's.

I can't get a good Taylor Ham & Egg sandwich in Chicago, but it doesn't mean I want my favorite New Jersey diner to open up in Chicago (well, maybe I do, but for other reasons). Maybe some things are just "of their place".

BTW, I think you can get cheese curds at Blue Frog but I cannot attest to their quality.

Poor man's Kopp's indeed, my feeling exactly. Though I do like Cluver's walleye.

As far as walleye is concerned, I don't see in the logic in knocking Culver's for being a "fast food" restaurant, as if that necessarily implies something substandard. I think fried fish is "fast food" regardless of where you buy it. It's really kind of hard to make fried fish any "better" by serving it on a white table cloth with a bottle of good wine.

No, but if some people pay 3x more for the same product, they think it is better.

Seems to happen more often than not. If I get a single often the cheese isn't even melted but I've never had problems with doubles. Doubles always seem made fresh while I am unsure about singles. Maybe it is just the Culver's near me however that suffers from this(Schaumburg on Algonquin).

I will always stop first at any Mom and Pop/Indy/non-chained place when on the road, wherever we are. BUT, my favorite "chain" place is Culver's. They have steamed green beans with onions and just a gazillion non-burger options. My kids are happy with their fast food action (gasp! without plastic crap toys!) but I can get the Walleye or the Roast Beef Sandwich or soup or so many choices. I know it's still not as healthy as eating a watercress salad in your car . . . but it's my preference for fast food.

Nobody mentioned fried cheese curds? The ability to upgrade to them from standard fries on a "basket" was my standard meal when I was sititng in waiting rooms in a Rockford hospital a couple years ago.

Undoubtedly one of the best sides of any chain, along with Popeye's onion rings.

Possibly Arby's potato cakes, only because it's like a big honkin' Tater Tot. And there's horsey sauce, evil tho it is.
Maybe Steak 'n' Shake's chilli -- it's not the world's best chilli, but it's great for fast food. (Side rant: you can't choose any two sides for a platter anymore at SnS, it's an upcharge to get anything but fries for the first).

I dont get to Culvers very often, only on road trips, but it is one of my favorite chains. Especially the deep-fried cheese curds.

But I was really disappointed in the curds yesterday in Champaign. The breading had some really super hot and spicy coating. Really hot! Like millions of scovilles. Ive sent Culvers a note and will share their response once I get it. In the meantime, does anyone know if this is a new option with the curds or a permanent change? A regional thing?

I don't know why I never thought if it but I am not definitely incorporating some jalepeno in to the breading next time I fry up some cheese curds. Thanks Culver's!

Oh, oh, I'm sorry, but this is abuse.

The Culvers scheduled to open in Morton Grove is on hold, (apparently there are financing problems)... I was really looking forward to those spicy cheese curds (somebody should mention the cheese curds... repeatedly.)

I love fried cheese curds. I love spicy foods. I do not love the chipotle cheese curds when I tried them last year.

Admittedly, I was exaggerating about "millions of scovilles" and I like Chipotle accented stuff. But these curdicles were more like Habanero Curds. Just burn. No smoky flavor. Way too hot! It was like dipping their regular curds in Dave's Insanity Sauce.

A rare Culver's misstep. By the time I visit them again, I hope they bring back the regular strength curds.

I've never understood the vitriol leveled by many here at upscale fast food. There are many restaurants and types of cuisine discussed that I have no interest in, so I stay out of those threads. Simple. Some of you should try it.
