    Flying Saucers!
My mother plans on coming in this direction to meet me at Kow Kow for her birthday lunch. For quite a while now, she's been looking for Flying Saucers. For those of you who may call them something else, they are two large, flat, cakes (possibly traditionally yellow?), filled with (chocolate?) buttercream and topped with chocolate frosting or glaze - kind of like an individual buttercream version of Boston Cream Pie. I haven't seen these in years. I saw Oakton Bakery's facebook page (shudder) and they mention them, but boy, is this not a flying-saucer-like bakery. I was all excited to take her there for a surprise treat. Are there any places within the vicinity of Kow Kow (Cicero & Peterson) that have these? I don't know if they're "American" or "Polish" or what. Thanks!

There are quite a few - some of my favorites include:

    Breadsmith on Dempster in Skokie
Great Harvest on Central in Evanston
Tel Aviv Kosher Bakery for great rye (Kaufmans in Skokie as well for a good rye)

Flying saucers is/are more of a south side thing. You may want to call Schlegel's on Touhy to see if they offer anything similar, although it probably wouldn't be called a flying saucer there.

My Mom is a big fan of Wholly Frijoles about 5 minutes South in Lincolnwood, so I was at the place again last night. The complimentary salad is a delightful salad (Iceberg and baby lettuce crispy tortilla strips, red onion, diced tomato, cilantro, corn and red radishes tossed in a creamy cilantro dressing, which I swear has buttermilk in it), I always enjoy this as my 'starter' but then things go downhill from there.
I had the leg of lamb with chipotle sauce, ok but just nothing special. The frijoles are truly commercial, no soul, not good.
Thankfully my Mom even said her chicken was not good and that she probably won't want to go back. whew.

Agreed, we've had a number of dinners at Tub Tim Thai
Meang Kum is terrific, we get it every time:
Fresh Chapoo leaves accompanied with: roasted coconut, sun dried shrimp, diced ginger, shallot, lime, peanuts and Thai hot pepper on the side, served with its original sauce.

Fish Cakes starter are good but personally I would have rather had another helping of the Meang Kum or the Thai Crispy Crepe

    Thai Crispy Crepe
Thin crispy crepe filled with a combination of minced shrimp, coconut, turnip, tofu, fresh bean sprouts and ground peanuts. Served with cucumber salad. This was excellent, our hostess admitted that this was a Vietnamese dish orginally (Banh Xeo) but that they had taken it and made it Thai, with excellent results.

    Entrees:

    Beef Salad, $8
Charcoal broiled sirloin steak spiced with fresh lemon grass, roasted rice, shallot, cilantro and Thai fresh pepper tossed with tangy lime sauce. Fantastic, this was delicious, beef had a deep grilled flavor with the citrus lime.

    Crispy Fried Fish Salad, $8
Crispy White baby scale fishes tossed with fresh lemon grass, shallot, roasted peanuts, lemon grass, cilantro and lime sauce. (Add Thai hot peppers upon request). Again, delicious, we ordered the dish with a spiciness of 2 out of 4.

    Pad Thai, $8
Fresh thin rice noodles stir-fried with choice of meat, diced tofu, egg, turnip and ground peanut. Garnished with fresh bean sprouts and fresh lime. Very good Pad Thai but we now skip and order the standouts.

    Ground Chicken w/Thai Basil, $9
Choice of meat saut?d with fresh Thai basil, garlic and Thai pepper. Served with fresh steamed white rice. I ordered a spicyness of 3 out of 4 and there was some heat for sure. Excellent dish.

I was talking with the hostess towards the end of the meal, she suggested we try this dish next time we visit:
    Shrimp Paste Fried Rice
Rice stir-fried with shrimp paste, accompanied with seasoned pork, crispy dried shrimp, shallots, shredded green mango, egg strips, lime wedges and Thai hot pepper on the side. Unfortunately I always forget to try this.
