Eater reports that the owners of Kabul House are opening "The Boiler Shrimp & Crawfish" a Cajun place where Basha was in Skokie at 3445 Dempster.

Admittedly, competition for the Middle-Eastern to Central Asian spectrum is a little tight in Skokie versus seafood shacks, but this seems like something of a stretch.

My husband mentioned to me that Black Cow at Golf & Busse in Mt. Prospect is closed and turned into something else. Of course, just after we bought gift certificates for a relative who loved Black Cow.

Anyone know any details? Is the new place at least owned by the same restaurant group? Maybe they'll still accept the gift certificates.

The Peet's Coffee & Tea in Winnetka is finally open; this location was a Caribou that shuttered all the way back in August of last year. This store, only the second Peet's on the North Shore, should give the sub-par Starbucks right down the block a run for its money.

We'd visited there just a few weeks ago: Very good burger, cooked to desired medium rare. One was a bacon/blue, the other a patty melt which hit all the marks I've been missing since Bogie's closed a couple years ago. Now I have to start my search over again... or be willing to get my patty melts under the fluorescent fast-food lights at Culver's.

Skokie Commons is the name of the new shopping center on the northwest corner of McCormick Blvd and Touhy Ave. Longhorn Steakhouse has a banner on it announcing their opening date as February 2. I'm not sure of the opening dates for Mariano's or Noodle & Co, in the same shopping center, but it looks like they're both getting close to opening.

Corned beef kings opening sandwich shop in Fulton Market
The Corned Beef Factory Sandwich Shop plans to open in the coming months in the Fulton Market area, focusing on just four sandwiches: corned beef, pastrami, Italian beef and a hot dog.

The under-construction, cash-and-carry concept will anchor the small storefront at 1009 W. Lake Street, across from the Morgan Green Line El station.

Its namesake products won't travel far. Behind the sandwich shop sits its longstanding wholesale arm, formerly known as Ex-Cel Corned Beef Co. Inc., which was recently purchased by new owners who are launching the sandwich shop.

There's a lengthy discussion about "Official" broasted chicken on the site. Unfortunately, I don't have time to find it right now, but a search would probably turn it up. Having said that, I can also say that Mother Clucker's version is not very good, based on three different visits to the establishment. Their chicken is generally precooked and not fried to order. It is fried very hard... to the point of being very dry (even the thighs and legs). Sides are unspectacular as well. I wish it were better, because MC's is walking distance to my house.

It's not the generic process that is branded, but the particular food service brand of food and equipment they use: http://broaster.com/branded-menu-progra ... -elements/

Damn it all to hell, Stevez!

I went the second day of their opening breaking my cardinal rule of waiting 60 days to try a new place after it opens so they can work their bugs out. When ordering I was talking with the owner. Nicest people. Slabs of ribs are Ala Gale Street, not BBQ, which is fine. So I ordered up three dinners, a fish, the ribs and chicken dinners to go. What I got was three dishes that were just OK. I can do as well here at home. So I chalked it up to my breaking my rule and said I'll return in 60 days.

So here I sit reading your critique and now I'm bummed. I oh so want the place to be special. I live at Six Corners and this place is close via the van.

We already have a pretty darn good Broasted Chicken place with Chicken Royale at 5930 W Lawrence.

Maybe he needs the small upright Souhtern Pride cooking rig to churn out BBQ?

One of the sexpositive groups I habitue ha(s|d) its monthly munch at Black Cow three times a year. The food was average, but cooked properly. Beer specials were OK (It was generally Leinenkugel.). You are probably uttering that the munch is less about the food than about the company. For me, the highlight of the evening though, was having ramen and singing karaoke at Karaoke House Nina in the west part of that mall after the munch.
Why no photographs? I have mostly ceased bringing my camera to sexpositive events, even public (or semi-public) munches. :|

L'Appetito is coming to 3332 N. Broadway Street, though the target opening date is late October :(

Kanok at 3422 N. Broadway has closed. I couldn't find a new building permit, but the windows are papered over and there's a sign out front in Japanese + a Japanese-sounding name (can't remember it...sorry!), plus a sign on the door indicating that construction on a new restaurant is in progress.
