If you don't read the Evanston Now story, 2 important notes:
1. Owner says "much" of Lulu's menu will remain as a carry-out and delivery only ("virtual") restaurant,
2. Closing mid-Feb, new space open mid-March
It's his business, he can do what he wants, but this 'not high enough average check', need to sell booze excuse is specious. I've been a loyal fan of Lulu's for 28 years. He would have a more devoted customer base if he didn't tinker with the menu and remove popular items. He's ravaged the appetizer section. It's been about a decade of mixed signals with regard to the strength of the Lulu's brand. He closes it - must be weak, brings it back from the dead - must be stronger than anyone thought. But the reboot was botched from the start by limiting the menu, when a multitude of dumpling options was central to the brand's strength. Save your whining about average check size when you remove several high margin items like 4-piece dumpling appetizers that you could charge $8-10 for. How were customers supposed to run up a larger bill?
