I'm only familiar with the Aurelio's in LaGrange. I haven't been there lately, but I actually like being in the restaurant, although I don't care for the pizza. At all. I don't like the cheese they use. But the rest of the menu is OK and the atmosphere of the restaurant is fine.

I grew up at the Villa Park location - baby photo was on the wall until they closed and moved, played Gauntlet and Simpsons cabinets with my crew until the buttons broke a la Stranger Things - and even there with Joe Aurelio frequently QCing, the order was always "light cheese, extra sauce" (with the sauce applied in thin stripes over the cheese) or a spinach calzone, which used a different cheese, or at least a vegetal barrier to the pool of oil on first bite.

This is probably the first "we order it our way at restaurants" proto-foodie instructions that led to all sorts of subsequent obnoxiousness. Aurelio's: extra sauce / light cheese or spinach calzone, or fuhgeddaboddit. Also, you can order any topping as a side, so you can get a mound of crispy chopped bacon (or finely diced green pepper and onions) if you want it, a sort of tsukemen-pizza experience.

Having had a surprisingly good experience at the one downtown on Roosevelt recently, and seeing this potential new opening up nort', I'm thinking the nostalgia is swinging back around and that more will be able to enjoy the sweet oddity of Aurelio's sauce, the Russell's of its category, the Sven & Ole's of the South and West 'burbs. If only I could get my hands on a McDLT.

May 7 will be a big day in Chicago food — and not just because of the James Beard Awards. Aurelio’s Pizza will open its Wrigleyville restaurant on that day too, which is the iconic South Side pizza chain’s first North Side location in its 69-year existence. The Chicago-style pizza restaurant opens in the former Myron Mixon’s Smokeshow Barbecue space at 3801 N. Clark Street at 11 a.m. next Monday.

The Tribune reported in 2015 that Aurelio's might be coming to Highwood, but there hasn't been a word mentioned about it since. Even then, I wonder where they would put one?

The sauce has always been a bit too sweet (in a NW Indiana sort of way) for my tastes.

I have been to the mothership in Homewood and while a beautiful restaurant it has all the charm of a chain.

When I was working in Hammond, IN their lunch buffet was very nice because it included Italian Beef sandwiches. Salads were great as well.

+1. I've never gotten the charm of Aurelio's

Here's something that I would normally post about in O&C, but would not want to start a thread on:
It was reported in the media that Aurelio's was thinking about opening a location in Highwood (a few years ago). I posted about this in O&C where I think it would belong. I never thought to start a new thread about it because it was simply a news story in the paper. Alas, Aurelio's never went any further than what was reported.

Just my opinion, but I think info about a new location should be in the main Aurelio's thread. If I heard Aurelio's was possibly opening a new restaurant, I would look for the Aurelio's thread. It obviously wouldn't hurt to have a mention and/or link in the O&C thread, but I would see that more for completely new restaurants, not a very established business opening a new location. Nothing is perfect, but IMO junk drawer threads are not my favorite.

Yes. That's why we moved it here from O&C, where it was originally posted.
