One imagines it's because of all the flavor-of-the-monthish competition around there now, which didn't exist when the place opened. (Shake Shack right across the street, which seems always to be mobbed, and Eataly, come to mind right away.)

And I wonder how the movie theater is doing. That had to be where a lot of their business always came from. But now there are more movie theaters in the area too. (BTW, 600 N. Mich has done a fabulous remodel, with reserved fully-reclining electronically-controlled Barcalounger seating in all the theaters. I recommend it highly! But maybe it came too late to save Heaven on Seven.)

Entrepreneur Marcus Lemonis announced today that he is bringing his new fast casual restaurant concept, The Simple Greek, to the North Shore Illinois community of Highland Park, slated to open in the next few months with plans to serve authentic Greek flavors for lunch and dinner daily. The new eatery will offer fresh and healthy Mediterranean cuisine and will open at 478 Central Avenue in spring 2015; joining the other franchises currently located in Pennsylvania.

Just received an email saying that Coppervine will be closing after service on February 14th.

    " Coppervine's Last Service is February 14th

"It is with a heavy heart that we are announcing that Coppervine will be hosting its last service on February 14th. It was a great ride, we've made some great friends, experienced some amazing food and drink combinations and are thrilled we had an opportunity to serve you. Thank you to all of our guests for your patronage over the year. Please join us during our last couple weeks of service to say good bye and enjoy Restaurant Week and/or our final service on Valentine's Day.

Opening a restaurant is like having another child. In fact, I spent more time at Coppervine in the last 13 months than I did with my son. Like with a child you pour your heart and soul into it hoping that you will raise a happy and successful person. As it gets older you begin to realize that it will have a mind of its own and the public will form its own opinion of what’s right so you must evolve your guidance accordingly to increase likelihood of success. Our people, product and process are the best it's ever been and it saddens me that I will never get a chance to see Coppervine grow up." - Don Sritong, Founding Partner"

He obviously has a better grasp of his situation than I do, nor do I know anything about his finances, but how bad does business have to be to close in only 13 months? If he was getting positive feedback it seems like a waste to pitch it in so soon.

Hey, it happens to the best of them - like SF's Charles Phan, who has closed three of his restaurants in one year, the most recent of which lasted only ten months (!). He does have one great big advantage, though; as the eater.com piece notes, "Thankfully, he has California's highest-grossing restaurant, The Slanted Door, bolstering his bottom line."

Comparing a shuttered business to a dead child is completely over the top, IMO. I'd have a lot more empathy if the analogy weren't so ridiculous. And I certainly feel bad for the folks who lost their jobs.

He's hardly the first person to compare owning your own business to raising a child. And lamenting not being able to see it "grow up" is not the same as saying "my child is dead." If you've ever been close to or involved in a failing business, you know how emotionally impactful, stressful and debilitating it can be.

I don't think a snarky response to a local restaurant closing from one of the chief voices of the site is a good look IMO.

It's merely my personal opinion -- not that of the site -- and I stand by it. I thought the analogy was similar to when football players compare their "heroics" to those of people who serve in the military. It's done frequenty but that doesn't mean it isn't completely ridiculous every time it's done. That doesn't mean I don't have sympathy, especially for the employees who lost their jobs. But businesses close all the time. In my world, those closures don't come close to the loss of a human life.

Re-read what he said, and you'll see no references to a "dead child" or to "the loss of a human life". That's all in your mind, not in his.

No need to argue against an analogy that was neither stated nor implied.

*Sigh* I'm just a horrible person to take his analogoy to heart. Not seeing a child "grow up" . . . maybe the child runs away or gets abducted by gypsies and never actually dies. My sincere apologies.

Ok...that's enough on this...in an effort to get this back on topic, Coppervine's opening chef, Michael Taus, is soon opening Taus Authentic in the former Prasino spot in Wicker Park.

Jamba seems to be retreating a little from the city. I noticed yesterday that the one at Madison/Wells is now a Red Robin, and the one at Van Buren went out of business earlier in 2014.
