    Fairly bold statement. Just off the top of my head some non-"Italian style" sandwiches that I happen to think are pretty darn good:

    Manny's corned beef and/or pastrami
    Torta Cubano at Taqueria Oaxaquena (and tortas in general all over Chicago)
    Cuban sandwich at La Unica
    Jibarito at Borinquen (is this even offered in the US outside of Chicago?)
    Banh Mi at Vinh Phat (and others)

    Like I said, off the top of my head, probably took me longer to write the list than think of it. Sorry you haven't found anything you like.

    As YPW mentioned, the grilled chicken sandwich with bacon, roasted tomatoes, romaine, and blue cheese at Milk and Honey on Division is fantastic.

    It's certainly one of my favorite sandwiches of any type in any city.

    The Jibarito is a Humboldt Park original!
    Also, Ambassador Cafe on Ashland and Addison has great Cuban sandwiches. I'm hungry just thinking about them

    Uh-oh... Ambassador is gone, Palmito is in the space now.

    Since Cafe 28 is some branch of the same family, maybe their express cafe next door has a similar sandwich at lunchtime?

    Haven't lived in Lakeview for several years and just assumed they were still there. When did they close? I will miss their pollo frito al mojo de ajo with congris....

    OOOh, Gleam, you're making my tiny little stomach rumble this afternoon. That sadwich has to be three servings for me now.

    Ahem,

    I know the owners of Cafe 28, and knew the two most recent consecutive owners of Ambassador. Not related, I don't think.

    PS, interesting that the poster refers to congri (no "s"). Technically, congri is the Oriente version of beans and rice made with habichuelas rojas and bacon, as opposed to the somewhat un-p.c. moros (y cristianos) made with frijoles negros and salt pork. Habaneros don't really make the distinction, however, and often call the black bean dish congri.

    I stand corrected! I knew this forum would come through. I guess I just get so tired of people proclaiming their love for potbellys and salami sandwhiches that I may have got a little jaded.

    Is there anything such thing as a good fresh healthy sandwhich in Chicago? Dont know how healthy it is, but I am also looking for a great Chicken Schwarma.

    Don't know if I'm qualified to call it "great," but a really good chicken shawarma is at Taste of Lebanon at Clark and Foster. Very cheap eats there, too.

    That location, at least the last time I was there, no longer offered the Rueben variation. But the Dempster location still has it. I stop there every time I'm anywhere near Skokie. If you haven't tried the Rueben I highly recommend it.

    Whiskeybent...I've been disappointed by a lot of chicken shawarmas because the chicken isn't actually meat layered onto a spit, where it's then cooked and cut vertically off of the spit when someone orders the shawarma. Personally, I consider the spit-cooking a hallmark of a shawarma, but a number of places which sell both lamb/beef shawarma and chicken shawarmas have a spit for the red meat, but prepare their chicken shawarmas using just chunks of chicken breast and thigh. Does Taste of Lebanon prepare their chicken shawarma using a spit?

    I am in love with the Turkey, Ham, and Gruyere sandwich at Southport Grocery.

    Even though I hate the service and the fact that you have a 45 minute wait if you go on saturday or sunday.

    Also I gotta say that the "Devon Avenue" - aka swiss, corned beef, and pastrami on rye - at The Bagel (on Broadway) is incredible as well.
