I have not been there, although I know exactly the place you are talking about. My office has kind of dismissed all of those places around there because it seems far away, but in reality, they are not very far, they just seem far. I'm up near sanders, and 294, but the drive down sanders to milwaukee is pretty darn quick. I've been dragged to that Famos Subs place a few times (waste of time if you ask me.) ENNYWASE -

Please DO tell. WHAT is good at Los Huaraches, as I'm kind of a mexican food hound, and the pickins sure are slim up around here!!! Also, any intel
on the other places in those stripmalls? Only things I've tried in that area are:
Famos Subs - not worth my time & effort, and
Pj Moondoggies - one of the best gyros sammiches I've had in a long while.

Their menu has a bunch of interesting items that I haven't tried, such as Cubana, Argentina, Milanesa tortas, chicharron Tacos, cactus tacos, ...etc.

I don't work over there on Sanders any more so it's a long drive, but I went there recently after going to Monica's up the road a piece in Palwaukee Plaza and left unsatisified with Monica's small cecina tacos that were dry and tasteless. One of these days I'll try Monica's again because some people really seem to like it and I might have caught them on a bad day.

I couldn't hold out any longer and had to drive down to Los Huaraches today to try the Cubana torta. Some guy almost killed me driving south on Milwaukee; he drove between me in the right lane and the car in the left lane! Insane.

Anyway, at the restaurant; I wish I had my camera; next time for sure. Big sandwich, with ham, Spanish chorizo, fried egg, breaded fried steak, cheese, beans and other stuff, served with jalapenos on the side. Very tasty! It's the best sandwich I've had in a long time.

Very good to know. I'm thinking I'll do a trial run on all of those places. I was stuck (again) in traffic over there on Fri, and tried to pay attention to all of the store fronts. There are a BUNCH of places in there. Maybe my first mission will be the "Sushi Box."

I was glad I read this post because after seeing a movie with the family yesterday we were right by Los Huaraches and decided to check it out. In short, we were really pleased with our meal. The Torta Cubana was delicious, as were several of the other items we ordered, including the fresh huitlacoche quesadilla. Thank you for the tip!

Too bad you don't like Famos Subs. My family likes it. I get the wrap and the turkey on focaccia.

Tony's Subs just opened one in Lakemoor almost across from La Vichyssoise. It is being run by his daughter. I always liked the Deerfield one, so I plan to stop at this new one. It is west of 12 on 120.

They had a 'for sale' sign up for the smoker and other equipment, so I'll say 'no'.

This was a very fast turnaround..it seemed like less than a month between the BBQ closing and Tony's opening.

Well, after my initial visit to Los huaraches yesterday:http://www.lthforum.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=14768, I ran into the Sushi Box to grab a menu.
Tested the waters today. Went strictly with sushi although their menu offers a pretty long list of Japanese and Korean specialties.
The place is a dive. Make no mistake about that. It has five or six tables, and a sushi bar with four chairs.
I went with a maki lunch combination for 9.95.
And also a sushi lunch combination for 8.95.
Maki combo was 6 pcs each of a kappa, cali, and tuna and spicy tuna roll.
The sushi combo today consisted of kani, tai, sake, and maguro nigiri, and a spicy tuna hand roll.
It came with a decent rendition of miso, and some korean inspired pickle offerings, and also a salad which was doused in some really bad, insipidly sweet, foodservice salad dressing.

The fish: C. Nothing was bad, but nothing struck me as being good. From the cross section of fish that I tried here, nothing stood out as particulary FRESH. Would I go back? Nope. For the same exact prices, Fish One in Palatine on Rand rd blows the Sushi Box out of the water. The quality and price of product from Fish One vastly outweighs the extra few miles it would take for me to get there. They offer a maki combo and a sushi combo at lunch for the exact same price IIRC, and the fish was consistently fresh. Overall, I'd give the Sushi Box a "meh" rating. I'll have to go back to Sushi Gallery on Milwaukee and Dundee to recall if that one was any better. Man o man, do I miss Benihana's $1 nigiri, and $2 maki sushi lunches

I tried the basil chicken lunch special.
From the menu, I thought it would include:
Pot stickers, or cucumber salad
Soup
Jasmine rice
Dessert.
I got: Pot stickers, basil chicken, and rice. No Soup. No dessert.
I ordered extra: Cucumber salad, and mango w/ sticky rice. Bill: 15.10.
I'll go back, as the lunch special for 7.00 appeared to be worth it if it included soup, and a dessert offering. I fear I may have confused them by ordering a lunch special / with an extra order of cucmber salad, and an order of Mango w/ sticky rice. They must have assumed I would not want the soup or the dessert that is suppsed to come with the meal. Yes, I'm being sarcastic. I'm a sucker for mango w/ sticky rice, so I had to order just to try, and the cucmber salad was a backup just in case the main part of the meal was crappy.
OK:
Two pot stickers:
Meh. not BAD, just Meh. Nice and crisp. Lightly flavored, but just meh.

Basil Chicken:
Asked if I wanted it spicy. I gave them a "Definitely spicy!" with kind of an attitude. They delivered with the heat. The dish itself was pretty darn good. Veggies were done quite well, even a little too much snap still left in them (perhaps someone is actually trying to account for drive time with to go dishes - ie. veggies will continue to cook in the containers?) Light brown slightly sweet sauce with an abundance of holy basil. A tad on the greasy side, but decent flavor, and best of all no 'glop.' The sauce / grease held in a pool at the bottom, and was not stuck to everything, so the items in the dish could be "dipped" into the sauce as it worked out.

Soup:
Wish I would have gotten some to sample.

Dessert:
Ditto.

Cuke salad:
Standard. It was about a quarter inch dice of cukes and shredded carrots in the sweet vinegar / sugar deal. OK. Standard.

Mango w/ Sticky rice.
Again, standard. Decent. Not mind blowing. not BAD.

I'll definitely be back. Address/ph number/full menu on web site above.
Wondering about curries there. If anyone gives it a shot, please report back. This place has potential.

My wife and I tried it last week and will not be trying it again.

We had tod mun (fish cakes) seafood salad, basil chicken, and mango with sticky rice.

The fish cakes were the size of quarters, 4 for $5, my wife thought it was a joke when I opened the container. They had a nice flavor but were tiny, expensive, and very tough.

The seafood salad is usually my wife's favorite. Their's was a huge turnoff because it smelled like fish. (and I don't mean in a good way) There was no heat in this dish at all.

The basil chicken was passable, but not good. It was the americanized version with veggies and a sauce as opposed to the ground up chicken and basil leaves usually found in Thai restaurants. I asked for "thai hot" and got no heat at all.

At least I can say that the mango was ripe, the sticky rice seemed old and much too sticky.

Oh and as the joke goes here, the portions weren't even large.

Lunch specials probably work out to be the better bargain here. At 7.00 for app choice, rice, main dish, soup, dessert, it seemed like it had potential. Quite possibly there are a few chefs working in the kitchen too, and renditions may have changed, but for lunch, I'll give it another shot. It's much closer to my office than the thai joint west on Dundee in Buffalo Grove near the Portillo's, and I know of no other thai joints in the area.

We took one for the team tonight, ordered in a few things from simply best thai (link above) nothing major but it's close and seemed easy. Our go-to thai place has been I Am Siam which we've grown to really like, so this was compared to IAS.

We thought the springrolls were...nothing. Completely unmemorable with a few sprouts, cukes and a hunk of tofu. The sauce was serviceable. The wrappers didn't seem like ricepaper to us, more like very thin crepes.

My husband loves crab rangoon, their version is called crab talay. There were six little mini-cigar wrapped things, extremely small and pretty boring. Couldn't taste any real crab and the skin was greasy but not hearty like a wanton skin. Sacue had chopped peanuts in it, was pretty mucha sweet chili, not bad, not terribly spicy. We ordered fried tofu as well, that's actually what came with the chili sauce and peanuts now that I think of it. There were maybe six little triangles, not hot and with no discernible flavor.

Tom Kha soup was ok in flavor if pretty watery. It looked a little like a campbell's condensed tomato made with water. I asked them to leave out the mushrooms, and in the container there were 3 shrimps that were overcooked. No greens, no cabbage, I didn't like it.

My husband loves pad thai (if you're getting a sense he's not real adventurous give yourself a star!) and always orders a side of peanut sauce to give a final "rank" to any thai place we try. There were 4 shrimps in his dish, which looked passable though I didn't see any bean sprouts. There was a lime wedge.

We also ordered a sticky rice with mango, which was a very small rice with a sweet milky topping and 3 slices of mango. I think it was $4. It was ok, the mango was not especially ripe, nor soft, so it was a bit underwhelming.

His decision: would work in a pinch but definitely not a place to seek out. For me, no. Don't like driving west on Dundee to Arl. Hts for IAmSiam but the travel time is worth the effort over this place.

I try all sorts of things, my husband likes their pad thai with shrimp (did you see the earlier "he's not super adventurous" comments?LOL) and LOVES their peanut sauce. We like their soft spring rolls as well. I love the tom kha. I've had a number of dishes and haven't really had one I didn't like. They'll also make rama beef or chicken if you ask for it though it isn't on the menu. I've never been for lunch, maybe will try it some time.

After the daily "what's for lunch?" debate in the office today, I decided I was gonna go out on a limb, and possibly take one for the team, and try a new place. I almost went to Demitri's on Lake Cook, but since I had to hit the post office, I decided to try Market Square on Dundee in that same plaza as the Jimenez right around 83. Turkey Rueben. Two others opted for Turkey Clubs. Ok, the soup that is included for the price is the same diner foodservice soup you are thinking of, but this is one of those places that roasts their turkey in house. A pure revelation. REAL TURKEY. THANKSGIVING TURKEY. Not that 'deli' turkey that the masses have been molded into thinking is some kind of real bird or something.(oh please do not get me started on that.) Long story short, Turkey club / turkey rueben at Market Square. Comes w soup, fries, pickle. 7.75 +tax. REAL turkey. I'll be going there once a week from now on. Oh, and by the way, the rueben I had was EASILY an inch and a half thick. The tryptophan should be hitting me hard soon..........
