In a major victory for Greater Woodfield area diners, the Old Country Buffet on Barrington Rd has closed and the following sign is up in its former space:

Coming soon! Priscilla's Ultimate Soulfood Cafeteria #2

I can't wait! No opening date was stated and I can't find any info on their website.

I just walked by Sweet Occasions and More on Clark Street last night (5306 N Clark), and they seem to be closed down. No idea when that happened. I tried calling this morning to see if I'd get a recorded message telling me if they were just moving somewhere or something, but the number has been "temporarily disconnected".

I'm sad; I really liked their ice cream. And that location was super convenient to my house. Anyone know anything about this? They always seemed to have a lot of business when I was out and about.

They've had temporary signage up at Bryn Mawr and Kenmore indicating they'll be opening soon. Don't know what their schedule is like, but hopefully they're just moving, not closing down.

    Hi,

"Closed for remodeling" is often a death rattle, when may be they really mean: "Closed for refinancing, if ever."

i was in Sweet Occasions this weekend and despite a huge crowd there was very little product in the cases. I bought some cupcakes that were incredibly stale and I was really sad about it. The ice cream case was mostly empty -- and there was very little candy anywhere in the place. I asked what the deal was and I got a shrug. So...whatever the issue was/is - they didn't want to discuss.

It'll be a loss for the neighborhood if they're gone for good. It was a nice little place to go have a sweet nosh or a quick sandwich.

    From the brand-new "Dish":

"Sweet Occasions and More (5306 N. Clark St.), an Andersonville ice-cream/candy parlor, has closed. . . ."

No mention of a relocation to Kenmore & Bryn Mawr, either. Updates as events warrant.

Il Covo on Damen has closed and will reopen as the Bristol: http://www.timeout.com/chicago/blog/out-and-about/?p=5951
After a bit of speculation and generic “Bucktown” references from other local blogs, we got the scoop on the location for The Bristol, the highly anticipated collaboration between former one sixtyblue GM John Ross, former N9ne GM Phillip Walters and chef Chris Pandel, an alum of NYC’s Café Boulud and Rick Tramonto’s arsenal of eateries. The Bristol will open in the former Il Covo space (2152 N Damen Ave) in mid-September. Il Covo will serve their last meal tomorrow.

Bristol stuff I’m psyched for includes:

    * A bar snacks menu of things like dill and sea salt “monkey bread” pull-aparts
    * A “5th Quarter” charcuterie chalkboard, listing house-cured sausages, smoked terrines and roasted marrow bones
    * A brunch menu (slated to start in October) that includes biscuits with honey butter and sausage gravy
    * Entrees that average under $20
    * A cocktail list by star bartender Debbie Peek that ranges from Moscow Mule era classics to seasonal, contemporary creations like a pear and elderflower combo
    * A wine list packed with biodynamic and organic picks

…and six taps pouring local brews, one dedicated to cask ale.

    Good news/Bad news.

I stopped in Erba tonight for some gnocchi. I was told by the server that, despite previous reports, tonight will be their last night. The entire staff was told Mid september (I forget if it was 13 or 14). Nice of the owner to give the folks who worked so hard for him one day notice.

It's quite unlikely I'll ever visit a restaurant owned by that jerk again.

Oh the same note, Joe, the sous chef at Erba who is on the opening kitchen staff at Bristol, told me their opening is Sept 16. He talks of doing a lot of whole animals. Expect offal! Yum!

It's kind of across the way from Veersaway, hope it's more authentic. From the outside decor, looks like it might be a "lunch buffet" /sit down type of place, a la India House.

I know there was a "Jaipur Palace" on Hubbard a while back, my co-workers used to call it "Diaper Palace" if that says anything about the food or the state of their stomachs afterwards. I would love this place to be somewhere where I could pick up a lunch special to go, (I work in the area) I am not too interested in sitting down for an overpriced buffet lunch with cloth napkins and all the rest. I have a feeling it will be overpriced because it's on Randolph.

I rode by there on my way home today and was wondering about it, too. Anyone been there yet?

The food was good and there was a happy vibe to the place. I tried Yat's when we were in Indy for the race last year and was impressed that he has stayed true to the New Orleans "style" of cooking. Jambalaya is authentic and so are the other dishes. I have come to avoid all the places that purport to serve "Cajun" food. I won't have a problem stopping at Yat's any chance I am in the area.

I tried Yat's last week for lunch and it was one of the most disgusting dining experiences I've ever had. I had the crawfish cheese sauce whatever they call it, tasteless glop. Bad bread. Off a steam table or whatever, but excruciatingly bad.

Anybody have any update on La Petite Amelia/Omaggio/Uber-burger, which were all supposed to re-open 9/1 after closing suddenly in late July for "vacation"?

I happened to drive by all 3 tonight and saw no signs of life.... plus Petite Amelia's phone has apparently been disconnected....

    HI,

From comments the owner made to Chicago Mag's weekly e-mail distribution, it appears they are closed. If this proves true and disconnected phones are not a sign of hope, could you please update the threads about these restaurants they are RIP? It will keep people from making plans to attend a closed entity.

Oh NO! I am pretty devastated that the Harrison Orange is closing! This is the one I first initiated myself with, the one close to my schools, the home of my first restaurant review for a newspaper, etc. etc. I could go on.
I find the Clark St. location to be nowhere near comparable. However, there is hope in the Roscoe location. They've got a bar, a dinner menu, and a much more open interior. I guess I'll have to fill my void here.

New Mexican place called "Grande Jakes" opening in the former Cap'N Nemos space in Buffalo Grove (strip mall just west of Dengeo's on Dundee Rd). I think they already have a location or two in NW burbs. Anyone been to one?

Went to Tonelli's last ever night on Sunday 8/31, it was of course packed and saw plenty of tears among the staff and longtime regulars. It was great to have one last dinner, but a bittersweet night overall.

I was at a wedding up north on Saturday. Between the mass and reception I enjoyed a couple cocktails at the hotel bar at the Doubletree in Skokie. When the menus were brought out I was surprised to see that it was actually a Boston Blackie's. We split a couple appetizers that were unmemorable. I think it may have just opened that day as the hostess was very attentive and there were some "corporate" types milling about making sure things were running smoothly. It still smelled faintly of fresh paint and drywall....in a good way, if that makes sense.

By the way, Counter Burger (which was open to the street when I walked by this afternoon) looks very tastily art-directed inside and out. Which of course is the most important thing.
