new restaurant on broadway in edgewater?

When walking near Broadway and Hollywoodish up to Thorndalish the other day, I could have sworn I saw a new restaurant had opened on the west side of the street.

I think the name started with Cafe.
I think it was an Italian restaurant.


And that's all I know. (It looked a bit like a friends and family night was going on, so I didn't go gawk in the windows like I normally would.)

Anyone know if I really did see a new restaurant? Do you know the name of it? If it exists, have you been? Google maps and the other internet usual suspects are not helping me out on this one.

Is that the location that was formerly South, and before that the Room?

I haven't been down that route in a while, but will keep my eyes open.

If it's the place that used to be The Room, the name is Broadway Cellars ... so it's not a place with a name htat starts with Cafe.

Thanks for the replies - it is definitely not Broadway Cellars (the old South/Room space), as that's where we were headed when seeing this other place a few blocks south of there.

Ok, I'll hazard a guess. I espied a new restaurant on Broadway and Balmoral (well, new at least to me), well south of Thorndalish/Hollywoodish that the OP was referring to. It had a blue storefront that struck my notice chiefly due to how amateurish the paint job was. I thought to myself at the time, that it looked a little hokey and might be a diamond in the rough, mom-&-pop-ish sort of operation. I think it was called Adria Mare. I would have gone in, but it was closed at the time. Did I win? Anyone been there?

I know it's tacky to answer one's own query, but that's what happens when one doesn't use the search function first. I just read nr706's take on Adria Mare. Guess, it's worth a go. BYO too. Still I wonder if this is the place Dayzella was referring to...

Nope, not Adria Mare. I haven't been there yet, either - but I definitely know which restaurant that is : ) Adria Mare has a nice back story, what with the husband and wife owners. I should go in sometime.

I will try to look tomorrow - with all this build up, it will probably end up being something that has been there for years and just has a new awning.

Was it the Peacock Cafe? According to a side-comment in a review of Ras Dashen on Yelp it may be an Eritrean restaurant.

As has been noted elsewhere, Eritrea was an Italian colony for a while, so that might explain any impressions of Italianness.

I was driving and it was dark, so I caught very little more than the name, and the rest from Google.

My mystery "restaurant" was Casa Italiano - a language school/social club on Broadway a block or so north of Balmoral. They must have been having some kind of night shinding.

Oh, well. At least it isn't entirely not related to cooking. They have signs in the window about their Italian cooking classes.

Nope. That's been there for several years now. It was Sheher Taverna in a former incarnation, a mostly Bosnian (and Mexican) restaurant. I don't know the backstory, but imagine ownership must be related. My one visit to it since it became Adria Mare found it pleasant but no more. We live about three blocks away and haven't returned. I guess that says it better than anything else. There's simply too much else in this city to explore, even in this neighborhood.
