Anybody from the Kansas City area living in Chicago might be happy to know that there is a new Planet Sub location that has opened up on Fullerton and Burling in Lincoln Park. I had tried it once a while back while traveling through Kansas so I stopped in today and got a super hero, an Italian, and it was actually pretty good and one of the better franchised sandwichs that Ive had. I dont know if its destination dining but if your in the area and want a sub this place is worth a try.

I quite enjoyed my Planet Sub sandwich when I was in Kansas City last time. It's more or less in the Potbelly's school of subs, but I thought their bread (at least in Kansas City) was a step above the toasted Gonella that Potbelly's uses.

Thanks for the heads up. My sister will be making a special trip from Milwaukee now that we know its open. She fell in love with Planet Sub while working in Wichita.

We went last night, as it's right by our place.

The menu (link below) is impressive with lots of interesting sounding combinations. Certainly not your average sub shop fare.

My wife had a pretty good greek salad and I ordered two different 6 inch subs, a chicken parm and some pastrami/roast beef/ham combo sandwich. While it was decent, it wasn't great in my opinion. I probably had too high of expectations based on the diversity of the menu and the positive reviews here, but it just wasn't anything great. A BIG caveat to my opinion would be that I'm not a big fan of wheat sub rolls and that's what they use. The wheat taste is fairly strong in their bread and I'm much more of a white bread kind of guy when it comes to sub rolls. (Bari is perfection to me in that regard)

It certainly wasn't bad though and I'll definitely be back to give it another shot and try some other combinations. The service was great and the place has a nice little vibe to it. It doesn't feel much like a chain.

I paid a visit to Planet Sub last week. Planet Sub puts out a very good product. They make all of their bread from scratch every day, including custom blending several types of flour to achieve their own take on whole wheat bread, which actually is a loaf that is somewhere between white and whole wheat, with a very airy texture. It's not a hearty whole wheat, which wouldn't work for these types of sandwiches.

There is a very large menu to select from, including a substantial selection of vegetarian sandwiches for those so inclined. The building itself is quite small and resembles a garage that someone has fixed up. There are overhead doors on two of the walls that are meant to be open in summer.

While Planet Sub is by no means a substitute for a sandwich from Bari or Riviera, it fits solidly in the Subway/Potbelly's School. Though I detest Subway, I'd put Planet Sub and Potbelly's in the same category of better than average sandwich.

Planet Sub cuts their meat just a little bit on the too thin side, but they more than make up for it with the freshly baked bread, which is light and airy and a bit focaccia-like as opposed to the toasted Gonella served at Potbelly's or the pre-made frozen bread they use at Subway.

My bf used to frequent Planet Sub in KC, he'll be glad to hear they've followed us here. :) I remember really liking the fresh bread(I esp. liked how airy it was even though it was whole wheat, or so I thought), but then being disappointed with the average deli meat and veggies. The bread is really the only thing that sets them apart from Subway, in my opinion. Sides are bland and nothing special.

I never had the chance to try it, but I think the Fullerton location is no more.

According to their website, Planet Sub doesn't have any locations in Illinois.

I walked by the former Planet Sub location on Sunday (1/13), and it is most definitely empty. Hey, better a chain closing than yet another mom 'n pop.

Not necessarily(and I'm not referring to Planet Sub...never partook); there're plenty of execrable mom n pops that I'd skip past on the way to a chain.
