Where would you send me for a crispy-on-the-top, right-balance-of-meat-and-potatoes version of this old school favorite?

There is some discussion (and a photo) of the corned beef hash at Patty's Diner here.

I'd first recommend that you meet the search function, conveniently located at the top of the page by the 'magnifying glass' icon.

I'd second recommend that you look at threads about Manny's and Patty's Diner. I'd tell you NOT to go to the Cambridge House if it were still in business, because they served little bricks of corned-beef hash next to the eggs and it was remarkably nasty.

Besides Manny's (who's CB Hash is more of a "loose meat" style, rather than a "cake"...but still crispy and delicious) and Patty's Diner, I'd also recommend Jack's Restaurant.

My vote goes to both Mannys (mentioned previously) and Walker Bros. They make excellent corned beef hash - holds together and you can ask for it extra crispy, if that's your preference. And coffee with real cream.

I'd never been much of a corned beef hash fan until I tried Manny's. The portion is enormous, for I think $3.75 with free wireless Internet. Unfortunately, Manny's breakfast potatoes are cut like au gratin potatoes and are not very good.

The Melrose Restaurant, at Broadway and Melrose, has a good corned beef hash.

Corned Beef Hash at Walker Bros. is one of thise things that should be a slam dunk, but I've always found them to have way too much nutmeg (?) in the mix for my taste. I stopped ordering CBH at Walker Bros. a number of years ago.

Interesting reply Steve. I just had it last weekend and didn't notice anything like nutmeg in the hash. It was, however, pretty garlicy, but in a good way. Next time I have it I'll see if I notice that.

Last time I had it, at their Highland Park location, it disappointed relative to my previous experiences. There was an unusually large amount of undercooked (i.e. raw) onion in it which imparted an extremely unpleasant bitterness.

I think the CBH at Café Selmarie is really good. The corned beef reminds me of pulled pork - nice big shredded pieces. The eggs came perfectly poached and the runny yolk on top of the CBH makes for just a delicious sauce. I am not certain, but I think the CBH is only served during brunch on the weekends.

A couple of years ago I had the CBH at the Hot Spot, but its been too long for me to remember what it was like. That is not the reason I have not been back. I have not been back because I don't care for the cucumber in the water. Both the smell and taste make my stomach turn and that is not a feeling I want to have while eating breakfast.

I think the CBH at Tweet is outstanding. It's made completely in-house, including the corned beef, which, according to the owner, is cured on premises. I had it for the first time about a month ago and I've been thinking about it ever since.

Maybe that was it, but I don't think so. OIn enay event, the CBH at Walker Bros. just ain't right IMO.
