Earlier this year, I had written about the praiseworthy Cielito Lindo Mexican Restaurant, 9648 S. Ewing Ave., whose owners are from Monterrey. I had hoped to pay a return visit today, but they were closed for the holiday. Instead, I took carry-out from La Paz #2, across the street. (La Paz #1 is in Jamay, Jalisco, Mexico, owned by a relation.) For a countertop place (with a smattering of booths), the menu was quite extensive, with a number of breakfast dishes, a fairly standard list of Norteno dishes, and a wide selection of seafood. I ordered the spicy shrimp, which tasted sauteed rather than fried, like a Paul Prudohomme dish, with oinions and green peppers. The spiciness was sharp, not overwhelming (although the cook said he could ramp up the heat on request). With some fresh tortillas and a fist full of lime wedges thrown in for good measure, it made a tasty repast for two. This place may be worth a visit by folks going to Calumet Fisheries (this is just a couple of minutes down the road). The staff was wonderful.
