Last week Cathy gave me a take out menu and calendar from a new place in Highwood called "Felix's Kitchen". We both thought it'll be a nice surprise for my husband whose name is also Felix.
I was not in the mood to cook dinner last night so, we decided to order out. My husband was not so trilled to order at this place because the menu was also in Spanish. It gives you thinking it may not be authentic. He called and introduced himself and talked to the owner in Chinese. The man reassured him that the food is done by a Chinese cook from Chicago's Chinatown. We ordered the Beef Chow Fun, beef and broccoli (nothing else), shrimp egg foo young (our safety food that the kids will eat) and chicken fried rice that was free($20+spent). When my husband went to picked up the food, the owner and the cook went out to greet him. They both told him that they can cook anything even it's not on the menu. The beef chow fun was very good it rivals the ones we ordered in Chinatown. The noodles were cooked just right. They also have some pea pods and strips of carrots that did not distract from the original taste of the Beef chow fun but added some interesting texture and sweetness to it. Next time we'll try other dishes.

    HI,

I really appreciated your thoughts on Felix. Eating Chinese in our area is beginning to look up. We can get soup noodles at Wonton Express that rivals Seven Treasures within 5 miles of our homes. Now Felix and you are happy with this new carry-out is really quite good news.

I recall from our phone call, Felix does not offer Chinese brocolli because they don't think there is local interest. If there is enough interest demonstrated, then perhaps they might change their mind. While they may not have it presently, it does not hurt to ask because it might show there is an interest.

I'm not surprised the menu is in Spanish. There is at least one other Chinese take-out in Highwood whose menu is dual language. Also where Felix is located is next to Tacos el Norte and the huge apartment complex behind it is populated with Mexicans.

Helen and Felix, thanks for taking one for the team. At least we can now recommend someplace locally!

Recently we received a flyer from Felix Kitchen in Highwood, so we thought we'd give it a try. We've ordered food delivered three times now (to Highland Park) and haven't been disappointed. Their food is quite good and extremely fresh. Right now they have coupons on their menu and we end up with enough food for the two of us for three or four meals.
We're partial to their shrimp lo mein.
In a few weeks, we're having some company over and I'll probably go and pick up so I can meet the owner and the chef.
    Best regards,
    GP Bob

Just stumbled back onto this thread, and appreciate all who are posting their experience.
This morning, my DH declared, "Tonight, I want Chinese!"... we used to eat twice a month at Young's in Glenview. While I know it was not good in many people's minds, it was the standard for my family for 50 years (literally.) I can honestly say, regarding seeking the ultimate Cantonese food -I think everyone's experience is predicated on the dishes they eat regularly and seeking that same texture, flavor, ingredients they are used to. For instance, in our home it is the egg rolls (seeking large with peanut butter, --I know, I know - read other thread - I have, several times!), Egg Fu Young, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Chicken Chow Mein, Shrimp w/ Lobster Sauce, Mongolian Beef, Mu Shu, and of course- Fried Rice. I will venture up to Felix' tonight and have my fingers crossed my family will be pleased. Thanks to ALL for sustaining this quest. So nice to know I am not alone!

I am very embarrassing by my error. I have been surfing on my Kindle and the version of LTH that appears there is very compromised. I had even been inside the China Kitchen thread, but after awhile these Chines Food threads have become jumbled in my mind. Please forgive my error. The search continues.

A quick internet search shows that Felix Kitchen closed nine years ago, shortly after this topic was last active before today's bump. Another restaurant, called China Kitchen (link), now operates at that address. China Kitchen was the subject of a couple of previous discussions here, one for an LTH picnic in 2011, and the other as a recent suggestion for best Chinese takeout in Lake County. Note that China Kitchen appears to be carry-out only, with little or no seating for dining in.

    Hi,

Where Felix Kitchen was located has been a series of Chinese restaurants using the same address, phone and menu (which gets tweaked over time).

Just before Christmas, 2017, a new owner took over. At least for a while, the old owner and cook is (or was) working there.

I have not been there since the new regime. I cannot comment on the food. Each ownership has had its strengths and weaknesses.

One prior owner made a really super crab rangoon, I never it liked it before this time. Suddenly it was not very good, then I noticed new cooks in the kitchen.

While this place is intended for take-out only, there are three tables and perhaps about a dozen chairs for people to eat-in.

    Regards,
