    Hi all,

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good Italian deli near Morton Grove?

I've been to Tony's in Northwest Highway and that's okay, but I'm looking for other alternatives.

I'm willing to travel the Edens to Deerfield Road to the north and Fullerton to the Southwest so long as it's not too far of the highway. I'd also go as far as McCormick to the East, Greenwood to the west, Devon to the south and let's say Old Orchard Road to the north if travelling more local roads.

I'm looking for someplace where I can get an Italian Sub made with Procuitto, Spicy Cacpicola, Provolone, LTO and Dressing.

    Thanks,

    John

Try Minelli Bros in Niles. Not really a sandwich shop, but has a great deli counter and butcher shop. I'm sure they will make any knind of snadwich you like.

    Thank you, David.

I finally got over to L'Appetito on Thursday for lunch.

I ordered their Italian sandwich but had them change the ingredients to match those in my first post. I will definitely be back there, as they were very accomodating. The food was great and not too expensive either. My sandwich, which was around 10-12", and a Limonata (sp?) was just over $7.

Now in saying that....does anyone have any more places to try?

    Thanks,

    John

I menat to respond to this earlier... I have gone there and it's pretty good. But I have to call in advance to get a specific sandwich made as they don't like to make something specific on the spot.

At the corner of Dempster and Waukegan (I think) is one of those Polish/Russian/Mexican/Indian markets that make the northern suburbs such cool places to visit. There is a deli counter with, among other offerings, Italian meats and cheeses (it's been a while, but I've definitely bought some good-quality prosciutto there) and if I recall correctly there's a sandwich menu overhead.

That's the one, thanks. Can you confirm that you can get sandwiches at the deli?

If a phone call does not confirm you can get sandwiches at the Produce World deli, I can confirm that they do. I had a pretty standard roast beef sandwich if I recall.

Some years ago I got a sub at Produce World. Unremarkable is the best way to describe it.

Unfortunately the "borders" youve mentioned preclude the best place :-)

That would be Da Riv - The Riviera on Harlem, *the* best spot for such
sandwiches IMHO. It is, unfortunately, not so close to the 94 (closer to
the 90, which has a Harlem exit) - its about 3600 or so Harlem IIRC. If youre
on Dempster in Morton Grove/Niles, you could just take Harlem all the way
down - but its a bit further than Devon. Or if by the 94 you could take that
I suppose, cut across on Irving Park Road to Harlem, and then a few blocks
    further south.

You pick your own roll at Da Riv - a 10-12" roll is quite possible, really.
The ingredients are amongst the best in town, the mozarella is completely
fresh (made every morning - they had barely enough to fill my sandwich
one day at about 5pm; and made 3 times a day on Saturdays IIRC). And
the prices are ridiculous - the Prosciutto and Fresh Moz is 4 bucks! And
the Diavolo (Hot Soprasetta, Hot Capa, Salam/Pros, Mozz, Hot Peppers -
almost but not quite a Will Special) is... 3.50! (That is, without the Limonata,
half the price you paid for your "not too expensive" sandwich... and, I'll
wager, tastier too - though, to be fair, I havent tried L'Appetito yet). I, too,
wish it was closer to Morton Grove or Niles... but I havent found a better
place closer yet (though I will definitely have to try Minelli Brothers soon,
didnt know they did sandwiches too).

    c8w,

While I agree Riviera is tops, I'm a fan of Minelli Bros even though I've not had a prepared sandwich. What drives me to Minelli's is the nice mix of Italian deli meats, excellent imported from NJ fresh mozzarella, terrific olive salad and the hottest over the counter Italian sausage for sale in Chicagoland.

How do I know it's the hottest Italian sausage in Chicagoland? A couple of years ago I did an informal survey, Caputo's, Bari, Joseph's, Riviera, Conte di Savoia, Freddy's, Tony's, Nottoli, Gino's and maybe a few more, extra hot Italian sausage at Minelli was the clear winner. I should point out that unless it's special request Minelli Bros extra hot, unlike the rest of their Italian sausage, is kept frozen as there is not the same degree of demand.

Bonus points go to Minelli for quality fresh meat, small, but well priced, wine selection, and being a stones throw from Bacik, a well stocked Polish deli, and Siam's House, a terrific Thai restaurant which has the added bonus of an Eric M Thai Menu translation.

    Enjoy,
    Gary
