    Hi, all -

De-lurking...what's up with Swank Frank at Milwaukee/Ashland/Damen? I only take the 56 through that intersection, so I know there are signs up, but I can't read them. Are they closed, or just remodeling? I had been hoping to try them out, because it looked like it was usually busy on the weekends, but the crowds around that intersection aren't exactly indiscriminate...anybody know?

I also saw that Johnny's Snack Shop (on Milwaukee, acros from the Wicker Park branch of the CPL) has closed. Always had cops inside - presumably eating - but I never got up the gumption to go in there...did anyone here?

Thanks! And I'm looking forward to de-lurking a little more often. :)

Swank Frank is actually relocating to your neck of the woods, somewhere in Logan Square. In its place, I hear, will be another bank. Thank god... if there's one thing this neighborhood needs, it's more banks. </sarcasm>

In any case, while I was a regular (I live about five doors down), I can't say you're missing anything. Typical burgers and hot dogs. Better than some (including Underdogg, across the street), but in no way noteworthy.

    P.S. Welcome :-)

Isn't that the place that served the deep fried twinkies? If so, that made them noteworthy...or at least notorious.

I stand corrected... the deep-fried twinkie was definitely noteworthy :-)

    I can't believe they're putting a bank right there. :(

That neighborhood is slowly going the way of Lincoln park. I know it has been for a while, but the pace seems to be getting worse. I heard a rumor a Louis Vuitton store was going near that intersection.

Last week, while dining at Kappy's, I spoke with the manager, George, who, along with his brother and father, runs the T.A.G. Restaurants group. He told me that they recently considered a lease option on that space for an America's Dog shop, but they ended up taking a pass because the "rent was too high."

Sheesh. These folks are big time, with shops at Navy Pier, Museum Campus, etc., so if they can't afford that space, who else can?

    I mean, besides a bank?

Yeah. :( I'm noticing that the yuppie/too cool for school hipster crowd is slowly encroaching westward into my neighborhood. I mentioned this to a friend of mine the other day, and she said, and I quote:

"As a gentrifier, trust me; it's a good thing. You'll be able to walk to your car at night, and there'll be a Starbucks on every corner."

    K. That sounds horrible to me. I can walk to my car at night just fine (so long as I don't look down any alleys at any hinky stuff goin on). And, more importantly, I don't WANT a Starbucks on every corner. I enjoy getting my cafe con leche from Taqueria Moran, and I like the coffee at Pancho's. Cozy Corner Diner is the best I've found in terms of cheap, satisfying breakfast/hangover remedy, and if Vas Foremost Liquors moves, I...I...well, I don't know what I'll do!

I don't know what is worse the bank or America's Dog! I just ate at the new location at Randolph and State and it was pretty terrible. I really think the only good think about the combo was that the Mountain Dew wasn't watered down....

Just wondering - has anyone heard anything new on Swank Frank moving to Logan Square?
