    hey folks,

I wondered if anyone knew how late taqueria atotonilco is open during the week, either the 56th and kedzie location or the one on 47th

    Hey zim,

Sorry to get back to you so late on this one ( ), but I believe most Atotonilco locations are open until 2:00 on weekdays and they're open around the clock on weekends. I just got back from the one on Kedzie (had mediocre birria and barbacoa tacos but very good tacos al pastor).

I've eaten in the restaurant's location on W. 26th St. at 4 a.m. on an early Sunday morning, more times than I'd like to count. I'm partial to the 47th St. location, because I once lived in the neighborhood (when it was predominantly Polish), and because I eat there when visiting a friend who is a parish priest in that neighborhood (not after 10 p.m., however).

A post-rehearsal visit to the Atotonilco #2 on 47th street yielded silky fresh griddled tortillas, half-decent al pastor, and the least palatable barbacoa I've ever had in the city. Even a large horchata (ground in house, at least) couldn't wash away that brainy, nasty taste. And as an avowed zombie, I have no objection to correctly prepared brains. But it tasted like the roast had been soaking in the deer skull-water from Dances With Wolves (you remember that scene, right?)

You don't mean they were actually fresh tortillas, hecho a mano, do you? I hope you do, of course, but my guess is that you mean fresh, mass produced tortillas (which can sometimes be pretty good, but I've yet to encounter TaP with hand-made tortillas).

The factory is connected to that location, so they're as fresh as mass-produced get (my understanding is that they're regularly walked over without even being packaged). A considerable improvement over most places, but not into Xni-Pec-on-the-good-days territory. Now if they only could figure out how to make the barbacoa not taste like suck.
