My son needs a procedure done there, but we're not that familiar with the area; since it's by UIC, would any Taylor Street eateries be close enough to walk? Or any other suggestions?

p.s. the procedure won't have any effect on what or how soon afterward he can eat.

Go to the Patio on Taylor St for an Italian Beef. You can probably walk there without a problem.

I'd recommend BomBon Cafe, which is about 4 blocks north of Rush on Ashland. The food is terrific, so you can walk over for lunch. It's also a nice place to sit and have a cup of coffee -- they have fantastic little cupcake-sized tres leches cakes, among other wonderful baked goods.

Of course, you'll have a wider range of options on Taylor Street. Still, BomBon is so good that I'd head north just for that.

There actually isn't a whole lot on Taylor street that is reasonably close to Rush. Many Rush and Cook County folks go to the cafeteria in the student center at UIC (which is only better than the hospital cafeteria because it has a Subway).

If you walk S. on Ashland to Taylor there is Pompeii just west of the intersection. They have nice salads and various pastas and sicilian style pizza as well as a pizza-strudel sort of thing. I think it's about as far as Bombon, but in the other direction.

If you end up deciding to drive somewhere close by I can definately rec Tufanos Vernon Park Tap - Old School Italian where the days menu is written on a chalk board- but be warned it's cash only- (I think theres an ATM inside) it's on a small side street (vernon) close by.
We try to go there whenever we're going to the United Center...

Good luck with your son's procedure- Rush is top-notch.

I killed some time around Rush when my younger son was born a few weeks early... there's a 24-hour Au Bon Pain in the building... Not awesome, but perhaps better than the cafeteria, and better than nothing in the middle of the night. Cookies, etc. are half price after 4!

But seriously, Pompei is not too far (though I do think of it as closer than BomBon, which is wonderful). Also, a little further east on Taylor is Conte di Savoia, where I've had a number of tasty sandwiches and also enjoyed browsing Italian groceries. Further yet (walking distance is relative) is Sweet Maple, where I've had a couple of good breakfasts.
