I have a friend staying at the Hilton at 700 or so S. Michigan Ave. I'm a 12 year Chicagoan, but I'm drawing a blank for a casual lunch within walking distance. Any ideas?

Within a few blocks of the hotel, you have Edwardo's for deep-dish pizza, Hackney's for burgers and French dip and their onion loaf, Amarit for Thai food, and Orange on Harrison for breakfast foods (omelets, pancakes, etc).

How about Eleven City Diner at 1112 S. State? I had a good corned beef sandwich there. Not Manny's but good. The matzoh ball soup, not so much.
Kind of a cool atmosphere in a faux-retro sort of way.
Man : I can't understand how a poet like you can eat that stuff.
    T. S. Eliot: Ah, but you're not a poet.

    All on South Wabash:

    Thai Spoons
    Harold's Fried Chicken
    Exchequer Pub
    Miller's Pub

All are within five blocks of your hotel. All will very reasonably priced.

Kitty O'Sheas, right there in the hotel, ain't half bad. Although they do charge hotel prices, the food's servicable, the staff is really from Ireland, they have a bunch of shelaighlies hung up over the bar, that bar has a number of good beers on tap, and it's an easy stumble back to your room.

Lotta grease in some of the above suggestions. For something a little bit different, sushi at Oysy practically just around the corner:

    Oysy
    888 S. Michigan

and there's a wine bar at the new Sam's down the block at Roosevelt and Wabash where a cheese plate can be had for about $12.

Across the street from Sam's, Bongo Room serves lunch with a few pancake holdovers from breakfast.

You could try the new kosher cafe by Wolfgang Puck at the Spertus Museum, 1 block north (except not on Saturday).

Yolk, two blocks south, has a lunch menu in addition to breakfast, I believe.

You have a couple of good suggestions on Printers Row already -- there's also Mediterra (kebabs, wraps), Standing Room Only (closed Sun) for chicken sandwiches etc, and Trattoria Caterina for weekday lunches.

Panozzo's, 4 blocks south on Michigan, has very good sandwiches for take out.

For dessert stop by Canady le Chocolatier for a chocolate or gelato afterwards (Wabash just south of 8th St).
