Czech/Bohemian in Berwyn/Cicero?

Are there any festive and good restaurants remaining of this type in this general area? I need something of this sort for x-mas eve. (a Monday)

Thanks Seebee, and Ann. The problem with Klas and Epicurean is that they are closed on Mondays. Is Czech Plaza pretty dependable food-wise?

I don't know if Operetta is open on Monday's, and I haven't been there in a few months, but that could be a good place to go (see here). In fact, maybe I will go there tonight

Unfortunately, most of my favorite Czech/Bohemian restaurants in Berwyn have closed since I lived in the area many years ago. Czech Plaza is solid, but lacks the ambience of Klas. Farther west there are several decent Bohemian restaurants. Most notably there is Bohemian Crystal in Westmont, which I prefer to Czech Plaza. There is also the Westchester Inn on Wolf Rd, which is a hole-in-the wall with good inexpensive homestyle food. I have not been there for a while. Little Bohemian in Riverside was good also, but I am not sure if it still exists. The Riverside restaurant, also in Riverside (naturally), was a popular standby, but there are better choices. I have also not been to the Moldau restaurant for at least a decade, but it was a pleasant place, and my favorite for a while. I have never been to Little Europe in Brookfield, but have heard just so-so things about it.

Again, I have not been to several of these places in years, so I cannot vouch for the quality (or if some are still in business). From the ones that have websites, it seems that they are all closed on Mondays, but maybe some will have Xmas eve events.

Being 100% bohemian, and have visited most of the above-mentioned, I would highly recommend Czech Plaza as being the most authentic, friendly service and reasonable prices.

Just so you know, Operetta no longer allows smoking in the restaurant, and although I thought it couldn't happen, the last time I went there, it was actually smoke free.

Has anyone been to Moldau lately? Last time I went they were closed.

Along with a party of 8 we dined at Czech Plaza Last night.

The pirogi made fresh and well worth the 20 minutes they take to prepare. Served with generous bowls of gravy and sour cream as condiments and topped with bacon and onions it is was hard to save room for the rest of the food.

The soups are good but not especially noteworthy. Some of the courses we had were the cabbage rolls, the fruit dumplings, the roasted duck, the chicken and the farmers plate. Everyone was pretty happy if not at least stuffed from the large portions.

In the last year I have eaten more regularly at the Westchester Inn and Bucovina but I am now reminded of why I used to frequent Czech Plaza. The gravy was pretty good, the dumplings very fresh and the service comfortable and friendly. They also had a few extra beer offerings which made our 2 1/2 hour meal more interesting.

All in all a good experience and I would say that on a good night Czech Plaza is as good as any Czech meal in the area.
