Any info on this Korean storefront at 3236 W. Bryn Mawr? I just came across an old review of it in TimeOut. There is one review of it on Yelp. I've been looking for Korean mom & pop catering-type shops (there are loads in Atlanta) where I can grab to-go containers of my favorite Korean comfort foods/snacks (kimbap, pajun, dukkboki, japchae, mandu, ban chan etc.) I'm so homesick lately and craving Korean streetfoods like mad! Anyway, I might go by and check it out tomorrow.

    Binofhay,

No specific info on Dal Paeng Yi, but there there there are a number of Korean catering and grocery/catering shops as you describe. Chicago Food Corp on Kimball, with it's large panchan bar and in house snack shop, and Dong-AH are my two current favorites.

Super H Mart, of course, has prepared foods, panchan and kimchee, including fresh made on the weekends, though my kimchee preference is New Chicago Kimchee, which has a rotating list of prepared foods as well.

Looking forward to hearing about Dal Paeng Yi, sounds quite interesting.

    Enjoy,
    Gary

I'm completely blanking on the name of the place right now, but there is a Korean place that has prepared foods for catering, parties, etc. It's on Touhy, in Lincolnwood, in the same little strip mall as New York Bagel. That would out the address at around 4700 W. Touhy. I think the place is called Happy(?). My parents got all the food for my sons 1 year birthday celebration. They even have the fake rice cake towers! Ha!

I did a Google Streetview of the area - it's called "Happy Catering," though one restaurant finder lists them as a pizza place...must check it out next time I'm on a bagel run...

I believe the place is called Happy Catering. It used to be called Happy Kitchen, yet the Korean letters phonetically sounded out poorly as "kuh-ee-tuh-ling" and it confused me for the longest time. I used to sit in rush hour, waiting to get onto the Edens, staring at the letters, trying to conjure up a Korean word that meant "kuh-ee-tuh-ling", when all of a sudden it hit me one morning. Aha!

    viaChgo,

Happy Kitchen/Catering is take out Korean with two tables for waiting or the occasional eat-in. Korean standards, freshly prepared and very inexpensive. Good spot to pick up a quick lunch.

    Enjoy,

I am Korean-American, born and raised here. My Korean is quite awful, so I usually just tell people that I look the part :)

Also, I drove by today and it looks like it might have changed ownership. It's now called Lee's Catering.

    Sharona,

I just noticed the sign changed to Lee's Catering as well, I will check it out in the next few days as New York Bagel and Bialy is a regular stop.

I'm wondering if this is the same Lee's Catering that was the 5200 block of N Kedzie, they had an eat in area that, on my two visits, I found less than compelling.

    Enjoy,

Stopped by the other day with a rumble in my tummy calling out for panchan, but Lee's Catering was closed - at 2pm on a Thursday. I hope this doesn't portend ill before I even have a chance to try them..

I stopped by Sweet Table instead; making a major detour from my original intent of a quick, light lunch. For ease in traveling I opted for lumpia - which I first thought a bit expensive at $6.50, until I saw that she filled one of those large round aluminum takeout containers! I also had the pork SioPao - huge, pouffy, fatty and sweet - a complete lunch and a deal at $1.95. Empanadas apparently take 10 minutes, which I didn't have at the time.

I noticed a steam table in back that had 6-8 offerings, and there are a few tables inside, similar to Lee's.

With Han Bat closing recently, and winter approaching, I'm guessing having a new seolleongtang place on the list is a good idea. I have not been in to eat yet, but in passing by I snapped some photos of the menus. There was a huge picture of a bowl of seolleongtang on the front of the building and the lady running the shop verified that seolleongtang is indeed their specialty. The menu was pretty vast and there were numerous things on the menu which I've never heard of. I'm really interested in checking this place out. If anyone has eaten here, let us know how it was, and I'll do once i get a chance to stop by.

Please excuse the photo quality, I was in a hurry and didn't intend to post the photos, but here they are nonetheless.

had lunch today with a fellow LTHer.

We split a number of items.

Hot Rice Cake - big pieces of rice cake (would Korean Pasta be a better term?) simmered in kochujang. Pieces are so big they give you scissors to cut up. A pleasant burn from the red pepper paste with chewy rice cake, a simple dish but one I really like.

Seolleongtang - white marrow soup w/clear noodles & pieces of flank steak. Nice pronounce flavor of marrow. With the addition of pepper, salt & some chopped green scallion this becomes a terrific soup.

& sorry I forget the soup laikom ordered, but after being doctored up with chili paste, it too was quite delicious.
I did absolutely nothing and it was everything I thought it could be.
