We are hosting friends from New Mexico for a few days, and we would like to take them to a special dinner. We live in the NW burbs, and we don't want to drive into Chicago. We would have a party of 6, including 2 teens for the dinner. I don't want to take our friends to a Mexican restaurant, since they always eat Mexican at home. Can you recommend any restaurants that would be a good choice for out of town visitors? Thanks,

Possibly the most unique restaurant, highlighting the area's ethnic diversity, and out in the NW 'burbs, would be Chaihanna

And I contend that Chicago has the best Polish food in the Western hemisphere. There are many in the city - on the Northwest side, Smak-Tak gets a lot of LTH love, as do many other Polish restaurants, but my favorite remains Lutnia, for its formal, old-world ambiance and tableside preparations.

    Chaihanna
    19 E. Dundee Rd.
    Buffalo Grove

    Smak-Tak
    5961 N Elston Ave
    Chicago, IL 60646
    773 763-1123

    Lutnia
    5532 W. Belmont Ave., Chicago

AltThai in Arlington Heights is solid for Thai food.

Le Titi de Paris, also in Arlington Heights, for upscale French food.

Bistro 22 in Lake Zurich for contemporary American bistro.

There are lots of steakhouses in Schaumburg, including the new location of Pete Miller's.

Something that they might not see as often at home is Indian.

Sizzle India has a menu that represents a couple major Indian food styles. I think their execution is good, the restaurant is nice and the prices are very reasonable.

    Sizzle India
    645 E Algonquin Road
    Schaumburg

    Best,

Thanks for all the suggestions of restaurants for our visitors from New Mexico. I know that our visitors love Thai and Chinese food, and so I am very interested in the Thai restaurant in Arlington Heights. I would really appreciate any other suggestions for either Thai or Chinese restaurants in the northwest suburbs. thanks so much.

A little bit more info then... Downtown Arlington Heights has a number of newer commercial developments, and AltThai is in one of them called the Arlington Town Square. (There are parking lots and garages in the immediate vicinity, not quite as convenient as a strip mall where you park right out front, but not bad.) The decor at AltThai is modern and hip - not fancy, but a definite step up from your typical ethnic storefront. We usually get fairly common Thai dishes (satay, tom kha gai, panang, etc) and we thought theirs were very good, as good as at the highly-acclaimed Thai places in the city. I've heard other people say that it's the best Thai restaurant in the northwest suburbs, but I've only tried a handful in that area so I can't really speak to that. Since they love Thai food, that's where I'd take them.

There are a couple of reviews in this previous topic.
