    I'm trying to have a surprise birthday party for someone. The theme would be 1935 Shanghai. I need suggestions about a place to have a party for 40 people. I'm trying to have it the evening of May 31, 08 so don't have a lot of time. I'd prefer a location in the city but am willing to go out to the burbs if I have to. Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks

    Lao Sze Chuan, Chinatown, upstairs. Having just done the same thing, however, you're going to have to call several times a day for several days until you get someone who really understands your plan (unless you get Tony to share his cell number with you, and even though I've known him for 7 years, our relationship is not quite there yet).

    As far as atmosphere and size is concerned (their banquest facilities are advertised for 30), Shanghai Terrace would probably fit the bill. As far as the real bill is concerned, tho, I doubt that it would be inexpensive. Anyway, here's the site:
