driving down Western today I spotted a sign at the Wendy's at western and Addison that read "Italian Beef is here!". It didnt look like a sign from the Wendy's corporation but rather just one you might see at a hot dog stand, I wonder if the owner of this franchise is putting it on the menu, not that ill rush to try it or even try it but it seemed odd. Is this just an old sign they havent removed since they moved in or are they actually taking a crack at fast food beef?

Anyone else seen this? or heard anything about Wendy's offering Italian Beef?!?!?! weird.

I saw it on the menu @ the Wendy's in Ottawa, Illinois a couple of weekends ago. I didnt order it, I am very picky about my Italian Beef sandwiches, and dont waste one on a Wendy's version.

Where was this sign? My first thought (and mind you, I'm not saying that I'm correct) is that the sign really belonged to that sub shop that is right next door to Wendy's on the NW corner of Addison and Western. That's just a guess tho. Maybe the wind blew it?

I am so intrigued by this that it's scaring me. I might have to get one. I would assume I'd throw it away after two bites. I know for a fact that somewhere in my car I have a Wendy's 2.00 gift certificate I've been saving for a vanilla frosty for the past two years.

It appeared to be on ciabatta bread, and I have heard on other forums it is Papa Charlies beef.

Ill stick with Johnnies when I am near there, or Paul's in Westchester for a beef during lunchbreak.

I just searched around, and also see it is Papa Charlies. I am no longer interested in the slightest. Although, with the sun shining today, it might be a good time to find that gift cert and finally get that vanilla frosty.

im with you, but now I am craving an Italian Beef for dinner, and I live nowhere near Johnnies. :(

I guess Ill have to hit the local hot dog, and beef shop out in Marseilles for a workable version.

Saw the ad as well, and it's at the one in Oak Park, too.

I pretty much loathe Wendy's. HOWEVER - they made the best condiment I've ever had in a fast food restaurant, the 'Chipotle Sauce' that used to come with one particular burger and one particular chicken sandwich. It was served in a very shallow circular container and was creamy, delicious, and sweat-inducing.

Take a deep breath and relax...no one's endorsing this as good or even worth trying. However to be able to call yourself one of the foremost experts on IB, you need to have tried them all...

    Michael's (old LP location)

Wendy's...one day I will have to make this sacrifice and be forced to relive a flashback like that at Beefee's. I imagine ill take one look close my eyes take a bite and rush to my drink, take a deep breath and put in on the list.

I know im forgetting a few as well...anyone else got a place not on this list?

thank you sir...as I sit here in my Carlos Marmol jersey. Wasnt trying to sound cocky or that I am the expert, I just love IB. Im 26 so im sure there are many great spots that have bit the dust...I remember a place on Taylor that used to have awesome IB, it was real old school, we always ate there for lunch when I went to UIC basketball camp.

One of the first drive's I took when I got my license at 17 was to Johnnie's, it had been years, we used to go on our way to kiddie land and I could never get my dad to drive from LP to Elmwood park for a beef pre-license days, his favorite is Jay's on Narragansett, near where he grew up. I imagine it is also how I googled upon LThforum...searching for "best AND beef AND Chicago"

    go bears.

I have a question about Margie's Beef on Cicero. It was a little north of Division at about Kamerling Street.

I haven't been in the area for years, but do remember Margie's from long ago as having outstanding IB.

A few years ago it was reported in another thread that Margie's had closed. http://lthforum.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=2931&highlight=margies+beef

After seeing Da Beef's post, out of curiosity I Googled Margie's Beef and came up with this report that "On November 30, 2007, MARGIE'S BEEF was issued a business license of type "Retail Food Establishment." It's at: http://chicago.everyblock.com/business-licenses/by-date/2007/11/30/393838/

Has anyone been in the area recently? What is the situation? Thanks.

There's also an "Orginal Mr Beef and Pizza" in Des Plaines or Mt Prospect.
I suspect they are the same since the signs are pretty much exactly alike.
Decent beef. really decent, and Home Run Inn type heavy buttercrust pizza.

Does anyone know if this Lukes up on Harlem around there is the same as the Lukes/Tores beef chain? I haven't stopped in that one, but I have my fingers crossed since the Lukes / Tores are my faves. Some find them bland, I find them perfect. The sign leads me to think it may be the same.

There is also a Mr Beef & Pizza at Algonquin & Elmhurst Rd in Des Plaines. I had a beef there a few weeks ago, I won't be back. Dry meat, tasteless gravy, plus I went to the drive thru & when I gave exact change, the window clerk dropped the change & wanted me to get out of the car & go chase it. I didn't.

The one on Harlem is very good.

    Odd, isn't it?

I don't know if the Lukes are related - but I can tell you that I dont care for the beef at Lukes on Harlem (Belmont). There are too many other good beefs around that area to waste time on Lukes. Just my opinion though.

As far at the Mr. Beef's being related, that too I don't know, but I do know that every single time I go to the one on Harlem, no matter what time or what day, the husband and wife owner team are always there. So I don't see how they can manage to have other restaurants. But who knows...
