    Hi

My mom moved to Lakeview (more-or-less Belmont and Sheridan) from near Philadelphia. She misses pizza. Of course, what she'd get there is the elusive NY style, and I've warned her that she may never find exactly that. But she's up for what Chicago has to offer.

So looking through the threads, I've found the following for her to try for delivery, please comment on appropriateness, etc:

    Cafe Luigi
    Renaldi
    Pat's Pizza
    D'Agostino's
    Art of Pizza
Apart Pizza ( we know it's more Italian style, does either location deliver that far? )

    thanks,
    Leek

Cafe Luigi is a good but not perfect representation of NY style pizza. I'm not sure if they deliver though.

I like Apart a lot. It's not as Italianate as some of the hard core places and I think they'd deliver down to Lakeview, though it may depend how far South you are. (I always get pick up.)
The Lou Malnati's at Wrightwood and Sheffield will deliver all over Lakeview. Just tell mom to get the extra tomato sauce. I think D'Agostino's is fine but not great. I'd prefer Michael's or Pete's to them. (Michael's is about 4100 N. Broadway, and Pete's is 3700 N. Western.) Panino's, in the minimall at Broadway and Waveland, makes pretty good thin crust as well. It's also a handy place for a takeout slice, especially since they have parking.

I am also a big fan of Sapore di Napoli just off Southport at Belmont. That is definitely more traditional Italian pie though (chewy, slightly burnt crust, fresh mozzarella, etc.) and I'm not sure if they deliver. But it's a great cute little spot for a quick dinner.

Just FYI, Renaldi's is undergoing a major renovation. The porn shop that occupied the seci=ond floor of their building has moved out and Renaldi's is taking the space over. It is presently being completely gutted. It also looks like they are putting an addition on the roo which might be a nice roof top dining type set up.

The pizza there is what I call "good for the hood".

I'm from Philly, too, and I love the pizza at Pizzaco's on Ashland at Belmont. It's very true-to-form East Coast style pizza with a crust that is chewy, not crispy, and foldable. They deliver quickly, and I've always found them to be very nice when we order. Even better, their pizza is delicious (and you get a free six pack of coke when your order is over $25).

Now if only there were somewhere in Chicago to get Tastycakes, then Philly transplants would really be lucky ...

I've always been quite happy with Pat's for Chicago-style thin crust. Call me crazy, but it's up there for me just behind Vito & Nick's and Marie's.

edit: I see in the OP that you're looking for East Coast-style pizza. If that's what you want, Pat's is not your place.

Though out of the Lakeview delivery area, I am very partial to Santullo's over in the Bucktown/Wicker Park border. Their plain Cheese pie equals anything I have had on my numerous business trips to NYC/NJ

Definately have Tastykakes at Philly's Best and it is just a few blocks away from Belmont and Sheridan. Claim to have Philly style pizza whatever that means, I have never had pizza in Philly only steak sandwiches. Pizza's not bad though, steaks are OK for Chicago but definately not on par with the real deal. Avoid the Wings and Tenders, questionable at best.

With respect to Renaldi's, I think it's a pretty good pie and although not quite NY, it's about as close as you get in Chicago -- slices are foldable and there's a proper amount of grease on top.

I have to second Art of Pizza's Stuffed Spinach Mushroom!! Awesome, not bad with a little sausage on top either. My wife is from Brooklyn and we get Renaldi's quite often as well. She really likes the pie from them.

As a Pittsburgh transplant, I'd like to second Santullo's as the closest to east-coast style I've found in Chicago. Happy hunting!

Oops, just realized they prolly don't deliver to Lakeview. Perhaps she will find herself in Wicker Park some day?

I stopped in for a couple of Cheese slices at Pizzaco tonight and was very satisfied.

While the pizza was thicker than what I usually find on my regular New York/New Jersey business trips, it was nonetheless quite good. Just the right amount of that grease that is a New York pizza requirement, and a really tasty sauce.

And as others have mentioned, the folks behind the counter couldn't be nicer people.

I'll be back when I'm in the neighborhood.

OK, we'll probably be taking Mom to one of these on Sunday for dinner. She has trouble walking and can't do steps, and we'd prefer BYO. Tried to call Pizzaco to ask about their entry and BYO and got no answer or answering machine. Metromix doesn't list this restaurant, Yelp doesn't list these categories. Can I get any assistance on these questions from you folks? Which would you take YOUR mom to?

    :)

Yes, but the Yelp listing still doesn't answer the BYO question. And unless I'm missing something, none of the posters mentions it. It does say handicap accessible.

I stopped by Pizzaco this week for a chicken parmesan sandwich. I liked the way they broil the whole thing when they melt the cheese, including the roll, so that it's all browned. Flavor-wise it was good but not great.

A few days later, I ordered a pizza for delivery. I was a bit disappointed that they got the order wrong--I ordered pepperoni and black olives, but got sausage and black olives. (I checked the receipt stapled to it and it said pepperoni.) I agree with the previous poster that it's thicker than true East Coast style pizza. It had good flavor, but I think I'll stick to Cafe Luigi in the future.

I would say Gigio's is a good bet. They are a hole in the wall NY style pizza joint on the 4600 block of broadway. I don't know if they go as far south as 2800, but at least you are east.

So far we've gotten takeout pizza from Apart and from Art of Pizza. In both cases the topping was fine, but the crust leans strongly toward the cracker style. Art of Pizza is more fully in that camp, so it worked better for me, mom wasn't thrilled with either. She ate the topping and left the crust. She liked the toppings from Art better. I like a thinner crust, so I'm not sure I'd get either again (I get pizza from My Pie down the street on Damen, and find it quite wonderful, but I'm not sure it'd last well with me taking it to her place).

    We'll keep trying :)

I just had Gigio's again last weekend. I will go as far as to say it is, hands down, the closest to NY style pizza I have had in Chicago.

big slices of thin, foldable crust that is a little tender, a little crunchy and a little chewy. good spicy pepperoni, the right amount of sauce and cheese, and the dribble of grease that forms in the crease of the pizza when folded

check out to see if they deliver as far south as you are.

Is the Gigio in Evanston run by the same people that own the one on Broadway? The one in Evanston has decent Pizza, but it wasn't nearly as good as the one I had on Broadway. I learned about Gigio's at the Taste a few years back, where I got into a Pizza conversation with people I was sharing a picnic table with. We were deriding the choices the Taste offered and our shared disdain of Connie's, when someone mentioned Gigio's as their favorite. Even though I only lived about a mile away in Edgewater, that particular block of Uptown never held my interest. When I finally went in to pick up a pie, the atmosphere of the store was a little off-putting. The uh, lady, serving and working the register was smoking at one of the tables with a small child sitting there (pet peeve) and never took the cigarette out of her mouth as she got up to complete the transaction. She was a little harsh, like one of the Wiener Circle ladies serving Pizza. I was so very happy that the guy who made the pie, also wrapped it up, so I was willing to give it a chance. When I got home, it turned out to be incredibly well-made, with a nice balance of cheese, sausage and mushrooms, all of which were very fresh. I guess the moral is not to judge the book by the cover, although despite the quality of the pie, I've never gone back. There are so many good options north; and I second the Apart and Art of Pizza mentions as well as John's on Western north of Armitage. Still, delivery of a Gigio's Pizza is an enticing idea; good food without the interesting service.
