When Cameron's ice cream parlor reopened this winter at Southport and Diversey (they had previously been at Pine Grove and Diversey, then had been gone for a while), I hoped they would survive the winter so that we could make a walk there a regular summer night ritual. Well, they did, and last night was the perfect night for our inaugural visit. I had a chocolate malt that I can only describe as the Platonic ideal of chocolate malts. Not
too sweet, not
too chocolately, the perfect amount of maltiness--all flavors ideally balanced. When something tastes so good, normal notions of satiety go out the window; there could have been no amount of it which would have not left me wanting more of it. It was a beautiful experience.
The corner doesn't get as much foot traffic as the old location, so I hope they do well enough there. There were customers in there when we walked in, and customers coming in when we walked out, but no wait to get waited on. Of course, that's a good thing for us customers, as long as it's good enough for Cameron's to flourish.
I'm hoping that the one-mile round trip walk from our house to Cameron's and back consumes exactly the number of calories in a chocolate malt or hot fudge sundae.
