Has anyone been to May St. Cafe recently & care to report? I am back in Chicago for a month after having moved away two years ago, and have been trying to get up to speed on everything that's opened since I left and to make it to some of the restaurants that I always meant to go to while I was living here but never had time.

I tried using the search function to see if there have been any threads but since "May" "Street" and "Cafe" are so common I was unable to narrow it down sufficiently...

    Ms. P,

There are recent threads on May Street Market, but nothing current on May St. Cafe, at least that I could find.

    Enjoy,

I went last summer for the first time and was VERY excited about it.
Sadly, I found the meal to be completely underwhelming and the service abysmal. I appreciate what they are trying to do with their food, but it was disappointing.
Not terrible per se, just totally meh. Would not make the trip again.
The only thing I remember was some sort of goat cheese empanada, which was good, but I can't remember anything else we ate.
Sorry I can't provide more detail but it was a year ago. I know they had a very good reputation at one point and I hope someone can provide a more recent experience.
For similar food Mundial and Mexique might do the trick. I liked both places. Some dishes were wonderful some dishes were just ok, but they had nice atmosphere and Mundial is BYO which is always a plus. Mexique's wines are very reasonably priced though.

A friend told me that this is the place for great, authentic Latin flavor, fun and great service. I'd like to try it. Any feedback I should know about? If not May Street - please give some alternative recommendations. Thanks.

We went during the week, maybe a year ago? It was good, the owner was nice. We were the only people there. They also only seemed to have one bottle of each wine, so if you want more you have to change to something else. There's major road construction going on around there right now, and I wonder how they are doing - the signs say they are open during the construction.
