    HI!
Ok, so I know that Meritage is now closed and has since been replaced by Duchamp (still haven't gone, but heard pretty good things). But, two years ago, I had a summer dish at Meritage: mussels in some sort of light broth with grapes. It sounds a little strange, but it was DELICIOUS. Does anyone remember this/know of any recipe that sounds similar?
    Thanks!!

I'm glad you brought this subject up. I never had the mussels at Meritage, but if someone can point me to better mussels than Bella Notte, then let me know. I have never had a single bad one, (Hopleaf, Kuma's, Bistro Margot). I've had good ones, West Town Tavern, Natalino's, Le Bouchon, but Bella Note, are always superb. Always, plump, opened, and not a spec of sand, they are so clean and the white sauce very dip-able. The escarole beans and sausage, a chopped salad, and I'm stuffed. Except I can usually get a bite of cannoli down with some coffee and Sambuca.

I can't remember ever having mussels at Bella Notte but i have certaintly been there many times over many years. For the first several years it was open the food was pretty decent, not great. Then about ten years ago the quality really seemed to slide and I noticed otherwise decent, well prepared pasta dishes were coming out less than al dente when requested and almost everything was way over seasoned. I probably havent been back since 1999 or 2000.

For my money La Scarola, which is just a few blocks east, is a way WAY better option for neighborhood italian food. I even prefer Cafe Oggi to Bella Notte.
