I just found out that I have to schlep out to Harvard tomorrow morning. Any decent breakfast or lunch spots in the area? Thanks in advance.

I have heard that there is a cute coffee shop near the Metra station that has a good breakfast. I find Harvard pretty depressing overall. A lot of Madison/Chicago regular commuters drive to Harvard and take the Metra there. They swear you can get a nice breakfast. I haven't found a place that looks exciting to me, but then I don't commute that way. The Metra that far out is too slow for my taste.

The options out in Harvard are limited. The city basically relied upon having the large Motorola plant within its borders and that plant closed five years ago.

The Swiss Maid Bakery is off the square and does a pretty decent job with pastries and the price is about half of what you would pay in Chicago.

We tried a pizza/Italian place on US 14 but that was pretty awful. The spaghetti was beyond overcooked.

There is a German place called the Heritage that is near the hotel on US14 that has a pretty decent menu but I have never had teh opportunity to try it. I am not sure it is open for lunch.

I would recommend the Royal Oaks Orchards for lunch, in season, but we are avoiding the place as they charge a $3 "parking fee" on weekends EVEN IF you make a purchase.

There are a few places in Hebron that are pretty good - the Bake House, the diner (name escapes me), and Crandall's - but you are talking a 10 miles drive.

Thanks for the responses. I ended up stopping on the way for a bite to eat in McHenry.

    Hi,

Where did you eat in McHenry? What did you eat? Would you do it again?

It's nothing special. Typical Greek (I think) owned joint with a big menu. I had the turkey club on wheat. I've eaten there several time before.

Dining choices along 120 are fairly limited. I stopped by Culvers on the way back east for a vanilla custard. I've never had the guts to eat anything else at Culvers.

The better news of today's excursion was that the price of gas at the Clark dropped a dime/gallon on my way back east.

The salads at Culvers are edible. THey are at least better than other fast food salads. I used to work in Whitewater WI where the lunch choices are pretty darn limited. I would get a chicken caesar salad at Culvers and it beat MacDonalds and Burger KIng which is about all I can say. I cannot eat most fast food salads.

The options in Whitewater are very limited. So limited that I mourned the day that they closed down the A&W/KFC combo. I have been very disappointed with any of the other options.

I have found the food at Culvers to be very inconsistent. The last salad that I had there had browned lettuce and was overdressed. The burgers are pretty decent but they are overpriced for what you get. Personally, if the options are Culvers or going home and making my own burger, I will do the latter in a moment.

On Thursday we were in Harvard to check out some parks and do some bird watching at Rush Creek Park just east of the Wal-Mart at the south end of town. We didn't see much of a place to eat though we did notice the Heritage wich isn't open for lunch. Instead we went south on Route 23 about 12 miles to Marengo where we had lunch at Flatlander's, a place I posted about before. They do serve breakfast. Marengo has about 6 eateries in that 2 blocks of the main downtown around Flatlander's along Route 23. Most are of the bar/grill variety and all looked pretty busy at noon time.

We drive up to Walworth once a month to pick up Powerball tickets. The Polish Deli has delicious food. We pick up their meat pierogies and potato pancakes by the dozens to take home, eat and freeze until the next visit. Around the corner from the Polish deli is the King Dragon Chinese restuarant where we also enjoyed the food.

It's been a few years since we've been in the Harvard area, but the Heritage house was always good. Even better on Saturdays when they have many German specials like sauerbratten. And the appetizer tray with the herring! They are located right where the road splits into Rt 14 and 23 at the south end of town.

And while in Harvard, say "Hi" to Harmilda :)
