I think they must have closed down. I searched the board today for a reco for a Saturday Indian buffet, and decided to go there. I called to make sure they were offering the buffet on Saturday, and the number was disconnected. On my way home, all was dark. Dang, finally made a decision to try something other than Gaylords, now back to the drawing board!!!

They closed a couple of months ago. They have had very little business since they relocated several years ago.

Consider New Delhi Restaurant on Meacham just south of Schaumburg Rd. (30 S. Meacham, 847-895-6900). My wife's family is Indian, and that is their preferred Indian restaurant in the Chicagoland area. My father-in-law normally hates going out for Indian food - he believes he can make just about anything he gets at most Indian restaurants better at home - but he is always happy to visit New Delhi. I have a couple of other spots that I usually prefer, but that certainly says something for the authenticity of the food offered, and I have never had a bad meal when there.

Until they moved, it was our practice on Christmas day to take a long walk that culminated in a visit to Sizzle India. Never did understand why they made the move to Schaumburg when they seemed to be quite busy on Devon.

They moves two miles further east on Algonquin Rd. from a site now occupied by Finn McCool's to a place next to an Asian grocery.

Personally, when I am craving an Indian meal, I head down to E. Schaumburg Rd. where there are a number of restaurants.

jlawrence, I believe you have mentioned before E. Schaumburg Rd, what do you (or anyone else who'd like to jump in!) recommend over there?

    Here are some options:

I ahve had a number of good meals at India Garden. They do a pretty good Indian buffet on Sundays.

Across the street from India Garden is Udupi Palace which features more Southern Indian dishes. The meals that I have had there have been quite excellent.

Here are some other options that I have not tried out.

I've worked in Schaumburg for over a decade, and my friends and I have tried most, if not all of the Indian buffets around Schaumburg, so I can offer at least our perspective. Each person in my lunch group, and for that matter everyone in the office seems to have their favorite, so YMMV. And to the 'burb haters (a group to which I'll have to include myself), if you like Indian buffets, Schaumburg might actually be a better destination than Devon (buffets only!)

Gaylord is probably our group's favorite, although it's gotten pretty expensive for lunch lately. That's actually a good thing since we're slowly rediscovering other buffets as we add less expensive places to our rotation. Gaylord probably has the biggest selection and everything is always excellent. They also have pappadum and bel puri. A friend from Bangladesh consistently complains that the food isn't spicy (heat) enough, and he has a point. But I find the same point can be made about all the buffets. My favorite here has got to be indian seasoned fried fish which is unique (to Schaumburg) and excellent. Naan is delivered to the table. They consistently have excellent galub jamun, indian style ice cream, and kheer for dessert.

India Garden has returned to our rotation after falling off for a while a few years ago. The quality definitely seems to come and go over the years, but they seem to be back on their game right now. They bring out very good tandoori chicken and naan to the table.

New Delhi is kind of a more dreary, not quite as good version of India Garden. It's cheaper, and usually has a dish made on a wok, so for those that miss the Chinese/Indian fusion of Sizzle it might be an option. (Can't remember what they bring to your table). This is my least favorite. I don't recommend this place to people who ask.

Don't forget about Udupi Palace across the street from India Garden. They used to be all south Indian vegetarian food, but they now have a mixture of both north, south, veg, non-veg dishes these days that is middle of the road good. What's nice is that they have good idli and sambar, and they bring hot, crisp masala dosas to your table. Dessert is usually kheer and carrot halwa, neither of which is that good.

If you're willing to drive deep into Schaumburg, Priya is probably my favorite. I've only been a few times since it's so far away from the office, but Priya does things quite differently than the other buffets. The average dish probably isn't as good as Gaylord, but I get a distinct an-indian-grandmother-cooked-this vibe which means when they get it right, they hit it out of the park.

India House is too far away for lunch these days, but years ago it was quite good. (for what that's worth!)

And Sizzle India (RIP), no one misses this stinker. The quality and service just kept plummeting year after year, good riddance.

My boyfriend and I are new(ish) to the Chicagoland area and this is our first Christmas here. We had a tradition in Phoenix of going out on Christmas Eve with a group of friends and having a huge familystyle Indian dinner. I am looking for places to us to go this year - we live out in the burbs (near DuPage airport) but we are willing to drive for a bit if it is really worth it. I have a few places to look into already - Kama Indian Bistro, Cuisine of India, and a few others but I wanted to know if there are other places I should be checking into.

Any other foodie Xmas eve-Xmas traditions out there?

    Thanks!

The India Garden location has undergone 2 renamings. I had lunch at the intermediate iteration. It was to my (not particularly discriminating palate for Indian) at least OK. They brought out some tandoori chicken from the kitchen as part of the buffet. The current name is Clay Oven.
