When I used to work near Northwestern Hospital, I loved their Spice of Life Cafeteria (operated by the Morrison's chain) on the second floor -- fresh, cheap, with lots of separate chef stations and plenty of seating. The Equitable Building also has a nice operation on the lower level. Are they the last of a dying breed? The huge Sears Tower American Cafe is long gone; the second-floor Aon Building cafeteria was a victim of post-9/11 security (although they have a passable replacement on the concourse next to Starbucks), and the downtown colleges have replaced their cafeterias with tiny snack bars/deli counters. Are there any "hidden" places any more where outsiders are welcome without having to bother with building security?
"Yankee bean soup, cole slaw and tuna surprise."

There's a great cafeteria on the lower level in the Chicago Board of Trade building called Celler's Market. Large salad bar, sandwich station, 3 or 4 specials a day. On Tuesday they serve turkey wirh all the trimming for $6.75, enough for two. There open for breakfast around 5:30 and close at 2:30.

Also, right across the street from the CBOT, in the Bank of America building (La Salle and Jackson) is "Cafe 231", very similar in quality and variety to Celler's Market and Spice of Life. It's on the La Salle side of the building on the lower level. No security, open to the public.

    Best,

The AT&T/ USG building (Franklin and Adams). The cafeteria is on the 2nd floor (just walk past security to the escalators). I particularly like their burgers and stir fry stations.
