Chinese on the North Side

I love Chinese food. I go to China town as much as I can. I have been searching for a great place on the North side near Lincoln Square. What do you guys think?

Your options, in my mind, are pretty limited if you want to escape standard storefront Chinese glop. That said, two things:

Close to Lincoln Square, I enjoy House of Wah Sun.

Other than that, hie thee to Sun Wah. (Multiple threads exist, one is here)

Good Luck! In terms of proximity to Lincoln Square, I prefer China Hut. It is nothing spectacular but does raise it's head above the rest in the sea of Lincoln Square-ish Chinese Food mediocrity. Their portions are ample and the prices are reasonable. I enjoy the green beans with beef which comes in a rich brown sauce. Also, their crab rangoon is one of the better versions that I've had around the area. Every time that I've ordered delivery, they've made it there quicker than quoted. I also take advantage of their lunch specials periodically. And I can't argue with a free eggroll with orders over $10 or free potstickers with orders over $25

i have concluded there is no good chinese in lakeview/lincoln square. susie china was our go to place for fifteen years until they recently closed. since then have tried young's and wah sun and have found both to be extremely lacking. i'm still looking.

Just go up to Argyle and Broadway and hit the aforementioned Sun Wah. They're the one with the barbecued ducks and maybe a pig or two hanging in the window. Can't go wrong, not only are they the best on the north side they're incredibly low-budget.

i know this won't be a popular reply and i even hesitate to post it, but we were at sun wah about three weeks ago when the place was filled with lthers having their duck dinners and we won't be back. we didn't have the duck and probably misordered but the condition of the bathroom totally turned me off the place. i'm sorry but it doesn't take too much effort to clean a bathroom and this one looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months. now don't jump all over me. they could have the best food in the world i just choose not to partake.

So why don't you just do takeout then?

Pretty decent food, good size portions and quick delivery.

I have to agree with most everyone.....

- Sun Wah is my favorite, hands down, but they don't deliver.

- Silver Seafood is a solid choice for #2, but I have had a few disappointments there and their delivery takes forever.

HOWEVER.... Mei Shung (Broadway and Catalpa) is a lesser known place and isn't quite as busy as Silver / Sun Wahbut my go to spot for delivery (they are usually much more efficient than Silver Seafood)

The reason delivery is important here, because if I want to go out for Chinese, I will go to Sun Wah or Chinatown.... especially Nov - Mar

I'll chime in as well with a recommendation for Silver Seafood. I love the Chow Fun and all the bbq items at Sun Wah but the ambience and such leave a bit to be desired. Silver Seafood isn't fancy but compared to Sun Wah it's a step up in comfort. The salt & pepper lobster at Silver Seafood is now my favorite guilty pleasure/splurge Chinese food dish, but honestly we haven't had a single bad dish there. Not everything is worth raving about but it's very solid and some things are simply great.

I have only one place on the northside, Yummy Yummy formerly Szechwan Garden. It was originally the only vegetarian restaurant in Chinatown. Mona made great food and fooled a lot of animal eaters. She moved to the northside and eventually sold the tiny storefront. It was renamed Yummy Yummy and the menu expanded to include real animals, bubble teas, and a hodge podge of offerings from other Asian cuisines.

The Chinese is still very, very good. The eggrolls are perfect. Crisp with just the right amount of grease, like good french fries.

We still take a lot of animal eating folks and they love the animal offerings as well as the fake meat stuff.

My husband loves the House Chilli Chicken if you like it really hot. I have also had them do a version of this with animal-free products for me. I also adore the Mongolian Seitan and DH loves the Beef Salad.

Finally, you gotta have a mango lychee bubble tea. Man the funkiness of those ingredients complete with the tapioca is not to be missed, no matter how cold it is outside.

Ahhhhhhhhh ... I feel your pain.

It also depends on how authentically Chinese you want your food to be. Silver Seafood has the most authentic Chinese restaurant food. I mean, they have an "American" and a "Chinese" menu. ORDER OFF THE CHINESE MENU. My favorite dishes are the steamed fresh fish (fresh like still-swimming-in-the-back-hold-on-while-I-catch-it fresh) and ong choy. I mean, these are the foods I grew up eating at home and in Chinese restaurants. My ex (who is Haitian, not Chinese like me) really enjoyed their Chinese sausage fried rice.

I wouldn't say that Sun Wah is less authentic but I think they are more "American" friendly. Plus, that's the type of place you go and order half a duck or half a chicken to go. Or some roast pork. Maybe for lunch you'd stop by and grab something. It's just weird to me to have a sit down dinner there although I totally get why you would.
