We'll be staying in Glenview next week for several days and one night we'd like to get some Bavarian/Polish/Czech food.

I've just discovered the Bavarian Lodge website and it looks intriguing. The menu looks good as does the beer list obviously.

I've also been to the Red Apple years ago. It was pretty good but I think we got there after the rush and lots of the buffet was a bit stale.

Obviously the Bavarian Lodge is quite a hike, 30 miles is a bit much but we're more than game if it's worth it.

Any other possibilities, maybe something closer?

Much closer for Polish food is GNR Smak Tak, on the great nort'west side of Chicago!

    Abouna,

We've been to Red Apple twice recently, and found the food to be very tasty, as well as a very well maintained buffet. The buffet attendant didn't stop moving and/or tidying up.

    My favorites:

A very good quality baked ham which you slice yourself
Roast beef - slightly overcooked for my taste.
Chicken croquettes - I like mushroom sauce with these
Several types of pierogi - beef and sauerkraut are my favorites
    Stuffed cabbage in tomato sauce
A thick tubular dumpling, about 1.5" in length, deliciously chewy
    Braised sauerkraut
    Potato pancakes

Ther was a fricasee of chicken gizzards, and "BBQ" beef ribs last visit. Braised ham hocks always. I love the shredded pickled beets, which seem to have some horseradish added.

Just like the movie Fargo. You'll need a nap afterwards!

Well THAT place looks darn good! Do they have beer though?

Boy those pics in that thread are mouth watering!

Otto, you have me rethinking the Red Apple also.

Smak Tak is BYOB, or maybe it should be BYOP: Bring Your Own Piwo.

Smak Tak for Polish is the way to go. You have already been to Red Apple and it can be good but it is a buffet. For German, I have not experienced the Bavarian Lodge but the GNR Laschet's Inn is closer and awfully good.

A friend of mine recently tried the Bavarian Lodge, and he wasn't that impressed. He much prefers the food and beer selection at Laschet's and Resi's.

Really? I'll keep my own opinion of the food and beer selection to myself and refer people to the following links:

Yes, Bavarian Lodge has a larger selection. My friend wasn't looking for the largest selection of beer around. He was interested in the total package, and feels that Laschet's and Resi's gave him what he was looking for. Different strokes and all that.

Well, not sure if you're looking to travel, but right in Glenview is Jolane's, an Austrian place near an electronics Mecca (and part-owner) Abt.

I've been once and had the goulash. It was mighty fine.

Your description has me salivating already. Sounds somewhat like garden hose?
