I haven't, but I'm kind of excited to learn about this. The sweet-and-sour cabbage soup at Mel Markon's, on Lincoln Park West, was a staple for me and my better half in days gone by.

I'm also a fan of the cabbage soup. Can't wait to get there and try a bowl to see if it's the same recipe.

I've been eating at the Markon family restaurants since I was a kid, starting with the deli next to the JCC at 91st and Jeffrey and beyond. I'll have to talk my husband into a trip to this new one as soon as possible.

It's as if time stood still, but I'm wondering if 70's schtick translates well to 2011. Not knocking Markon, his restaurants kept the kitchens open into the wee hours back in the day, but it's like LEYE bringing back Lawrence of Oregano or Great Gritzby. You can't go home again.

I tried to go to Bia for Mia on Sunday afternoon (Mar 20), but it was closed. The business hours were posted on the door indicating they were supposed to be open, but the place was locked up and dark inside...not sure why.

Its amazing he is still alive. I wonder how old he would be now? He did have the best cheesecake with fresh strawberries on top.

My favorite Mel Markon experience was hosting an event at Weegee's a couple of years ago to raise awareness of the pedestrian environment and joys of walking in Logan Square. Part of the evening included a naming contest for a cocktail that Alex (owner of Weegee's) invented for the evening.

Mel was there -- I had no idea who he was at the time, just another random neighborhood character -- and he submitted the winning name. For those interested in trivia, that cocktail name was the 'Footsie.'

Not sure what would happen if you tried to order a Footsie at Weegee's today. I'd love for someone to try and report back. In the meantime, I'm revisiting my memory of the evening knowing that our contest winner was a restaurant legend in Chicago. Good stuff.
