What are some of the best vegetable or vegetarian preparations in Chinatown? A friend has recently been given doctor's orders to avoid meat, poultry and fish for awhile, and Chinatown is closeby for lunch. (Complicating factor is that he is not too crazy about mushrooms.) Thanks.

My first vote would be Mapo Tofu from LSC ( no pork added, obviously). You have to be careful with some things you order though, because vegetables may still have been prepared in a pork base even if they don't contain any meat in the dish.

I like the spicy garlic green beans that are stir fried. Sometimes there is a eggplant preparation also. Vegetable fried rice is always good. Tofu dishes with vegetables might appeal.

Eggplant in garlic sauce was a notable highlight (in an otherwise so-so meal) at Double Li.
I really like the szechuan green beans at Spring World. They've got awesome lunch specials (though I don't believe the green beans are an option). Also veg-friendly is the pickle & cold appetizer bar there (some items have meat, but many do not).

And you should be explicit in your ordering. We once asked for a dish to be prepared with "no meat" and it arrived looking suspiciously meat-laden. When we asked what was in it we were told "no meat -- only pork."
